To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE M. JENsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hay- -ward, in the county of Freeborn and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Self-Locking Block and Pulley, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to self-locking blocks and pulleys, and more particularly to pulleys adapted to be used for compressing fodder into ensilage, the objectbeing to provide a pulley which is so constructed that as soon as the pull is taken off the rope it will be locked, thus preventing the rope from passing back through the pulley.
Another object of my invention is to pro vide a device which is very simple and cheap in construction and one in which great pressure can be obtained bya single pair of horses.
With these objects in view the invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stack, showing my improved pulley in use. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the frame used in connection with the pulleys. Fig. 3 is a side view of my improved block and pulley, partly broken away, showing the brake and pawl. Fig. 4 is an end view of the same. Fig.5 is a perspective View of the casing of the upper half, partly broken away. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the pawls. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the lower half of the pulley. Fig. 8 is perspective view of the brake. Fig. 9 is a perspective view of the other pawl.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates a frame formed of parallel bars A, connected together by cross-bars A The end of the bars A are apertured, and secured in each end is arod B by a nut, the other end of the rod being provided with an eye carrying a spring connection C, which is connected to a clevis C, secured in an opening in a rib D of the upper casingD of my improved block. The casing has apertured ends and is provided with apertured partitions D the openings in the partitions being in alinement with the opening in the end and in which is secured a shaft E, on which are mounted grooved pulleys F.
One end of the casing is formed with an outwardly-extending apertured portion D and the adjacent partition is also provided with a similar apertured portion D between which on a pin is mounted a pawl G, having a bifurcated end adapted to engage the ratchet formed on the sides of a pulley H, mounted on the shaft E between said partition and end, and prevent the same from turning backward. Passing over these pulleys is a rope I, one end of which is connected to a grooved roller J, mounted on a pin carried by the upwardly-projecting arm K of the lower casing K, which is also provided with apertured ends and partitions K in which is secured a shaft L, carrying grooved pulleys M, over which the rope 1 passes. The other end of the casing and the adjacent partition is provided with outwardly-extending portions K K, having openings formed adjacent their upper edges, in which is secured a pin on which is pivoted a brake-shoe N, provided with a grooved lower end adapted to engage the rope and a reduced upper end on which is mounted a pawl 0, provided with a bifurcated end adapted to be held by a flat spring Q into engagement with the ratchet edge of the pulley P, mounted on the shaft L between said partition and end.
A clevis R is secured in an opening in the rib K formed on the casing, which is connected to a rod S, carrying a log S, adapted to be buried in the ground. An anchor T is also connected to the clevis R by a rod .T, which securely holds the casing in position against all strain.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have provided a device which is very light in construction, so that it can be readily carried from place to place and easily and quickly set up.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with casings provided with pulleys having ratchets formed on their sides, of a rope connected to one of said casings, passing over the pulley in said casings, and a brake-shoe carried by one of said casings, provided with a pivoted pawl, for the purpose described.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with casings provided with pulleys, of a rope connected to one of said casings passing over the said pulleys, one of the pulleys in each casing being provided with a ratchet edge, and a pawl arranged in each ICO casing adapted to engage said pulleys, one of said pawls being carried by a brake-shoe adapted to engage said rope, for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the kind described, the combination with casings provided with pulleys, of a rope connected to one of the casings passing over the pulleys, one of the pulleys in each casing being provided with a ratchet edge, a pawl pivoted to one of the casings adapted to engage said pulleys, in said casings, and a brake-shoe arranged. in the other casing adapted to engage said rope carrying a spring-actuated pawl adapted to engage the ratchet-pulley for the purpose described.
4. In a device of the kind described the combination with a casing provided with pulleys, of an arm projecting upwardly from one of said casings, a rope connected to said arm passing over the pulleys, one of the pulleys in each casing being provided with a ratchet edge, a pawl pivoted to one of the casings adapted to engage said ratchet-pulley in said casing, a brake-shoe pivoted in the other casing adapted to engage said rope and a springactuated pawl pivotally mounted on the end of the said shoe adapted to engage the ratchetpulley of said casing for the purpose described.
