PURSE BLOCK FOR'SBINES.
No. 288,650. Patented Nov. 20, 1883.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEoRGE MERCHANT, JR, OF GLoUoEsrER, MAssAoHosETTs.
PURSE-BLOCK FOR SEINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 288,650, dated November 20, 1883,
Application filed July 7, 1852. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE MERCHANT, J r., of Gloucester, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Purse Block for Seines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the substitution, for the ordinary purse-ring used in seines, (a plain iron ring,) of a pulley-block adapted especially for use in pulsing the seine, and having provisionfor the purserope and bridle-rope.
In the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters ofreferenceindicate like parts, Figure 1 is a View of a seine, showing the po sition of the purse-blocks. Fig. 2 is a view of my improved purse-block. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
In Fig. 1, A represents the seine; B, the corks on top of it; 0, the bridle-ropes; D, the purse-blocks; E, the purse-rope.
As formerly constructed, common iron riu gs are placed where the blocks D are in Fig. 1, the bridle-ropes C are fastened to these rings, connecting with the seine, and the purse-rope E passes through said rings and into the boat 'E passes over the pulley G in the shell D, and
the bridle-rope passes under the cross-bar H, (through the opening I above the partition J,) and is made fast to said cross-bar by means of a cord, K, to accommodate which a gouge or depression, L, is made therein. When the seine is pursed up, the pulley-blocks, being brought close together, are in danger of lapping into each other-i. e., the shells D are apt to be forced in upon the pulleys G in the next blocks and interfere with the pulleys and rope E. To prevent this, I have provided the fenders S, one on each edge of the shell, as shown, so that there is no danger of theblocks interlocking or catchinginto each other. Thus a practical block is constructed for use in seines, and great frictionis avoided.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described purseblock for seines, consisting of the shell D, provided with the fenders S, extending laterally across the same, on opposite sides thereof, the horizontal partition J above the pulley G, and the crosspiece H, located at the upper end of the frame, and provided with an indentation for the re ception of the cord, by means of which the bridle-rope is secured, all combined and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
GEo. MERCHANT, JR.
