UNITED STATES Y PATENT @FFieiE.
ANDROWTALFSON, or COLUMBUS, OHIO.
COMBINED PORT-LlD AND HAWSE-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 280,552, dated July 3, 1883.
Application filed May 18, 1883.
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ANDRow ALFSON, a citizen of Norway, at present residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Port-Lids and Hawse-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of the port, with the hawsepipe in elevation and port-lid raised. Fig. 2 is an end view of the port-lid. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the port-lid, showing arrangement of chains, &c.
My invention relates to certain improvements in means for raising and lowering portlid's of armor clad vessels and a movable hawse-pipe attached to said port-lid, by means of which the anchor can be readily raised and drawn in upon the deck, and when the port-lid is closed be entirely protected and covered by the armor of the vessel, the construction and operation of which I will now proceed more particularly to point out and de scribe.
Referring to the drawings, similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is the side of the vessel; B, the covered deck; 0, the port; D, the port-lid. To the inside of said port-lid are pivoted the arms a, the other ends of said arms being pivoted to the blocks E, which work between the guides I). Through the center of each of said blocks E run screw-shafts F, which have their bearings in the stationary blocks 0 c, and engage with the screw-threads in the blocks E. Said shafts F are connected 011 their inner ends with suitable machinery for operating the same, and by turning the shaft in one direc- 4 5 tion the blocks E are moved toward the blocks 0, thus opening the port, and by reversing the (N0 model.)
G is a movable hawse-pipe, through which runs the anchor-chain (l. The hawse pipe is secured to the under side of the port-lid by flanges e, which engage with the dovetailed cleats or guides e on said lid. The hawse-pipe can thus be slid backward or forward.
f f are chain wheels, over which pass the endless chains g. The hawse-pipe is fastened to the endless chains 9 by pins 9, orin any other suitable manner.
f is a chain -wheel 011 the shaft 71 upon which shaft are secured the chain-wheels f.
i is a chain passing aroundthe chain-wheel f and is connected with suitable machinery for operating the same, and imparts motion to said wheelf and through the shafts h to the chain-wheelsf.
H is a hole or stationary hawse-pipe at the bottom of the port, through which the anchorchain passes when it is desiredto leave the anchor out and close the port.
To open the port the shaftsF are set in motion and the blocks E moved outward, thus raising the lid. To close the same the motion is reversed. The port -lid being open, the anchor is raised, and by operating the chain '1'. motion is imparted to the wheel f and through. the shaft h to the wheels f, thus setting in motion the endless chains 9 and drawing the hawse pipe back to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1, and the anchor swung in upon the deck. The port-lid can then be closed, the an ehor being under the armor of the vessel.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The port-lid D, in combination with the movable hawsepipe G, secured to the under side of saidport-lid, and means for operating the hawse-pipe G, whereby it can be moved in or out when the port-lid is raised, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
2. The port-lid D, having the movable hawse-pip'e G, chain-wheels f f, and chain 9, in combination with the chain-wheel f chain 1', and means for operating said chain, chain. 17, and means for opera-ting said Ohain,
whereby the hawsopipe can be moved in 01- snbstantially as shown and described. 10 out, substantially as shown and described. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in 3. The p01rt-1id 1), having the arms a blocks presence of two witnesses. E, serewshafts F, blocks 0 c, and means for ANDROXV ALFSON. operating said shaft, in combination with the \Vitnesses: movable hawse -pipe G, having the chain- I \VIL'LIAM S.
