Description
UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
Lonen G. LADD, or PAwTUckET, RHODE ISLAND, HssIGNon To SMITH Y `GRANT & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
HOISTING-BUCKET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 314,031, dated March 17, 1885.
Application filed October 20, 1884. (No model To a/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOREN G. LADD, of Pawtucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improvement in Hoisting-Buckets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in that class of hoisting-buckets described in the Letters Patent No. 290,649, dated December 18, 1883, and it consists in the combination therewith of pulleys arranged to operate in the bight of the ropes or kchains which pass around the drum, whereby the closing power of the bucket will be greatly increased, as hereinafter set forth.
Figurelis a perspective view ofthe bucket. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the drurn and pulley.
In the accompanying drawings, AA are the opposite jaws of the bucket, which are pivoted to each other at the point b by means of a rod, c, extending from one end of the bucket to the other, and loosely upon this rod is placed the drum B,having at its center an enlarged portion or sheave, C, to the periphery of which is secured the hoisting rope or chain D, as usual in such buckets. The rods E E E E are pivoted each to opposite corners of the bucket, and converge upwardly to a pivot-bolt, F, to the middle ot' which is pivoted the link G,having an eye, a, to which the hoisting rope or chainHis also secured. The bolt F is provided with fixed heads d d, to which are pivoted the pulley-blocks I I, adapted to receive the bight of the opposite ropes or chains,J J,
Heretofore in buckets of this class the ropes 4o or chains J J have been attached by one end to the periphery of the drum B and the op-` posite end to an eye or ring located at a point near the connecting bolt or joint for the convverging rods E E. The ropes or chains J J 45 would thus operate as a single purchase only; but by the employment of the pulleys I I the closing power of the bucket will be doubled, and the ropes or chains J, which run obliquely from the pivot-joint to the pulley, will serve 5o to prevent the pivot-joint of the bucket from catching at the hatch of a vessel when the bucket is being hoisted frointhe hold.
Iain aware that the niain parts of the bucket herein described are not new; but
I claim as Iny invention The coinbination'of the pivoted or hinged jaws, the upwardly-converging rods, the drum and sheave, the hoisting ropes or chains, and the pulleys with the ropes or chains attached 6o to the periphery of the drums and to the pivoted jaws and passing over the pulleys, substantiall y as described.
Lonen G. LADD.
