tures, a spring-like device which is prefer- I ably carried on the upper of the shoe and which, when the shoe is applied to the foot of the wearer, will clamp the upper snugly and firmly around the ankle and immediately above the ankle to retain the shoe upon the foot.

The invention further embodies a structure which when used in connection with a shoe,

permits of retaining the shoe on the foot without the use of the usual buttons or laces. In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a'shoe,

showing the upper bent outwardly, with usual lining 12 which, however, is cutaway adjacent the upper edge of the upper, as shown, to provide a space 13 along the upper edge of the upper, for'the entire length thereof, a series of flaps 14 being sewed or otherwise secured to the upper edge of the upper 11 and provided with clasps 15 for clasping the flaps 14 onto the upper edge of the lining 12.

A, spring-like clamping member 16 is carried in the space 13 and comprises a curved back plate 17 and a plurality of front plates 18,.curved springs 19 being secured to the ends of the back plate 17 and to the front plates 18 to connect the same, as shown, so that the clamping member will be substantially U-shaped, with the back plate 17 at the back of the shoe 10 and a front plate 18 disposed adjacent the front edge of the upper 11, the flaps 14: being provided toretain the clamping member 16 in place on the upper of the shoe, it being readily seen that the flaps can be swung into open position so that the clamping member can be removed when the same becomes worn and it is desired to apply a new clamping member to the shoe.

In the use of the device described, when the shoe is placed upon the foot, the springlike action of the clamping member will immediately cause the upper of the shoe to fit snugly over the ankle of the foot and clamp the shoe to the foot, it being thus seen that the shoe can be readily applied to the foot and retained thereon without the use of the usual laces or buttons, the usual front flap 20 of the upper 11 being adapted to overlie an opposing portion of the upper in order that the shoe will present a neat and effective appearance.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

The combination with foot gear, of a foot gear attachment, comprising a spring-like clamping member consisting of a curved back plate, curved springs carried on the ends of the back plate, front plates carried on the free ends of the said springs, with the said clamping member adapted to lie within the upper of the foot gear and adjacent the upper edge thereof, and means on the foot gear and engaging the curved back plate, the springs and the front plates of the clamping'member to support the same on the upper of the foot gear with the front plates of the clamping member lying adjacent to the front edges of the upper.
