Specification of LettersPatent.

`Application led August 18, 1913, Serial No. 785,397.
To aZZw/wm i'mag/ concern.' v
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. `CLAY a citizen of the United States, residing at Cedar Falls, in the county `of Blackhawk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothesv Driers or the like, of which the `following is a description. n 1 My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as clothes driers, and re' lates particularly to a folding device particularly adapted for inserting in a suitable support for carrying clothes during the drying thereof, which device, after use, may be easily detached from the support, folded so as to occupy small space and stored until it is desired to use the same again.
The invention has among its objects the production of a light weight folding device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable, efficient, adjustable and satisfactory. n
To this end my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts herein shown and described,
and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is substantially `a side elevation of the device and a ysectional view of the support. Fig. 2 is anivenlarged view of a portion of the device. Fig. 3 is a Sectional view taken through the center of the device, and Fig. 4, is a sectional view taken substantially on line 4, 4L of Fig. 3.
Referring to the drawings, in which the preferred form of my device is shown, 1 represents an upright post, preferably constructed of tubular metal pipe, and arranged to carry a plurality of arms 2, which carry the clothes lines 3, the device being soconstructed that the Varms may be compactly4 folded against the post and the device stored in small space when notin'use. Slidably and rotatably positioned on thev post is a suitable part or collar 4, provided with ears or the equivalent, to which the ends of the arms 2 may be pivotally secured by bolts 6, or their equivalents forthe purpose.
Arranged on the post, preferably` at the top, is a collar or cap 7,-which is provided with a shoulder 8, so as to restupon the top of and be supported by the upright post 1. The cap is also preferably provided with a closed top part 9, so as to keep water and '4 3 are taut.
dirt from entering into Vthe end of the pipe. The cap or collar 7 is preferably rotatably secured on the end of the post in a manner s o that 1t may be easily detached, if so de'- sired.v e As shown, it is provided with an internal groove 10 in the flanged portion 7 arranged to receive a piny 11, extendingr through the end of the post. The pin 11 1s inserted through either of the holes y12 (see Fig. 4)' and does not'interfere with the rotation of the part 7 about the post.
The arms 2 aresecured to the capV part 7 by brace bars or members 11i, the same being pivotally secured kin place by bolts 1G, or the equivalent, to the arms, and by bolts 15 to the ears on the part 7. When the collar et is moved' along the post away fronrthe cap part 7, or as shown in the drawings, is dropped, the brace bars 14; draw the upper parts of the upper arms 2 up against the` post, so that the device is very compactly folded.- To open it the collar t is raised to the desired po1nt,preferably untill the lines desired position, a latch member 17 is provided. The member' 17 shown is secured to the upper capV or collar by a screw 18, or its equivalent, and provided at its free end ,with engaging faces 19, adapted to engage the flange or lip 20 on the part 4. The member 17 shown is made of resilient'material and given a slight twist so as to bring the edge against the liange. Bearing faces or teeth 19 are preferably provided on member 17, so that some'latitude is permitted in positioning the collar 4. As the line shrinks orstretches, the stretch or shrinkage may be taken care of by engaging the flange 2O at the proper'tooth in the latch member 17. Anydesired means may be provided to facilitate raising the collar 4 into engagement with the latch member 17. As shown, a forked lever 28 is carried by a wire 27, or its equivalent, from the post or from the upper cap. The end of the lever is forked as at 29 and arranged to embrace the post under the collare. Bearing down on the free end of the lever 28,'raises the collar into engagement withv the desired' tooth on the latch member, or on the other hand facilitatesy To maintain the collar et in ther consisting of a concrete base part 23, adapted to be positioned in the ground G. If desired, a metallic lining 21 may alsol be arf ranged in the socket in the member and a vent 25 is provided for drainage, the Same extending through the bottom of the socket to the lower end Vof ythe part. To close the socket when the drier is detached .for storing, preferably provide a cover or'collar 22. As shown, this may be arranged so that it rests againet the'post l when the same is insertedin theY Socket, but falls of its own -weight to close the socket when the post yis removed. Vlhile, ofA course, the Socket member may be Aseit in any desired manner, it is preferably arranged so that'it is Slightly below the'top of the ground,
that a lawn mower or the like run over the socket Without injury to the inOWer. The device being of exceedingl light Weight, it may be easily set up in position for use, and is easily folded and stored array, leaying theflawn free `and'olear and keeping the line clean until it is desired to use the same again. 'i i' Y Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial 'modifications may be made in the saine Without dev parting fromY the #spirit of my' invention;
, hence I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself tothe exact form, conetruo tion, arrangement or combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
W hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
VIn a clothes drier, the combination of an upright post, a collar part slidably arranged upon said post yand rotatable thereabout, Said collar proiiided'vith a flanged portion thereon, a cap part rotatably mounted on Said post at the upper end thereof, means fQl ,detachably Sewing S21-'Kl @er in Position, cpneisting of a detachable pin carried by Said Pest] with th@ ends Qi the P111 Pr-Ojeng from ,each eide of the post, said cap arrangedY engagement with Said pin at the ends thereof, a resilient member rigidly .Secured to said cap partY and depending therefrom, said latch member provided with engaging faces'arranged to4 CO- operate Withl the flanged portion yof said collar, and plurality of arme pivot-ally secured to one part and provided With'brace members connected 'to the other part.l
''In testimony whereof, hat/'e hereunto signed'my name in the presence of two snbscribing witneeses. Y
