Description

A. WALKO.
SOUNDlNG TOY.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.5.1915.
L163fl$9 1 Patented Dec. 7, 1915.
ANDREW WALKO, OF FLORIDA CITY, FLORIDA.
SOUNDING- 'IOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 'I, 4915,
Application filed August 5, 1915. Serial No. 43,784.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW WALKO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Florida City, in the county of lDade and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sounding Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sounding toys.
An object of the invention is to provide a toy including an anvil section and a hammer section that is adapted to be grasped by the hand of the operator to cause the striking head to swing in opposite directions to come in contact with the anvil section at opposite sides of the handle.
With these general objects in View and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views:Figure 1 is a perspective view of a sounding toy built in accordance with the present invention, and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of'a portion of the same.
Referring more in detail to the accompanying drawing, the reference numeral- 5 designates the shank of the main body-portion of the device, the said shank being constructed preferably rectangular in crosssection as shown in Fig. l and carrying at the lower end thereof the gripping handle 6. The outer end of the shank 5 is slotted to provide a pair of corresponding leg extensions? in which is pivotally supported the striking hammer.
Thestriking hammer is of substantial T- shape and includes the shank 8 journaled its-lower end on the transverse pin 9 extending through the leg extensions 7. A reduced portion 10 is formed on the outer end of the shank 8 and is adapted to be received in an opening provided in the central portion 11 of the striking head, and to be retained in position by the fastening pins 12. The striking head 11 is provided with opposite striking points or ends 13 and operated in a manner to be presently described.
The anvil section includes a central supporting block 14 having a centrally-positioned opening of a shape coincident to the cross-section of the shank 5 and to be received on said shank and retained in position thereon by a wedge-shaped transverselypositioned retaining pin 15 positioned above the block 14.
Dished metal plates are secured to the upper and lower surfaces of each end of the block 14 and include a butt portion 16 positioned in alinement on opposite sides of the block 14 as shown in Fig. 2 and re tained in position as by rivets 17 or other suitable fastening means. The main bodyportions 18 of the metal plates are dished as shown in Fig. 2 with the opposite edges of the corresponding plates suitably spaced to permit each plate to vibrate in a manner as desired. It is to be observed that the rivets 17 lock both of the dished plates 18 solidly onto the block 14 so that these plates are arranged at opposite ends of the blocks in pairs and have the effect of a doubleended tuning fork. In other words, when the member 13 strikes either of the upper plates 18 the lower plate 18 adjacent to the upper plate is caused to vibrate, sympathetically in unison.
From the above detailed description, it will be readily understood that by grasping the. toy by the handle 6, and swinging the same in opposite directions, the striking ends 13 of the hammer head 11 will be caused to alternately strike the dished metal plates 18. The resultant sound will be entirely difi'erent from that obtained if the devicewere Wholly constructed of wood or rigid metal as the vibration of the dished plates 18 will offer a pleasing metallic ring.
While the form of the invention herein shown and described is what is believed to be the preferred embodiment thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms, modifications and arrangements of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as. set forth in the appended claims.
What I claim as new is I A sounding toy including a main shank, a handle carried by the shank, a block fixed transversely of the shank and handle, oppositely-disposed pairs of dished metallic plates each having a flat butt portion solidly fixed to said block, the remainder of each 5 plate being entirely free whereby when one of a pair of plates is struck the remaining plate of the pair will vibrate in unison, and a T-shaped striking head pivoted to the shank and arranged to alternately strike the center of one of each pair of said plates. 10
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ANDREW WALKO.
