Description
Patented Dec. 31, 1929 unirse STATES PATENT OFFICE i JOHN A. OTTERBEIN, 0F MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNORTO THE KIRBY MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF MIDDLETCWN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONu NECTICUT TOY Application led May 31,
My invention relates more particularly to that class of toys commonly known as noise makers, and an object of my invention, among others, is the production of a toy of this class that shall be simple in construction and durable and eiiicient in operation.
One form of a toy embodying my invention and in the construction and use or' which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved toy.
Figure 2 is a similar view but looking at the end of the base.
Figure 3 is a view looking at the flat surface of the base, the striker being shown in one position.
Figure 4 is a similar view but showing the striker in its striking position.
In the accompanying` drawings the numeral 5 indicates a handle that may be of any desired material, preferably wood, and of any suitable shape. A pin 6 is rigidly secured in the end of the handle, projecting therefrom, and a star or scape wheel 7 is rigidly secured to the pin.
A base 8 is rotatably mounted on the pin 6, preferably underneath the scape wheel, the pin passing through the base near one end thereof. The base has upturned sides 9 and such base, including the sides, may be composed oi any suitable metal capable of producing noise.
A pallet 10 is pivotally mounted on the base with its teeth adapted to make contact with the teethol' the wheel 7. A stem 11 projects from the pallet along the lengthwise center of the base and a hammer 12 is secured to the outer end of the stem.
In operation the handle is grasped in the hand and a roundabout motion is imparted thereto, this causing the base to rapidly rotate on the pin 6, and the pallet being revolved about the wheel 7 a rapid vibrating motoin is imparted to the hammer 12 causing it to impart rapid blows upon the sides 9.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes I have described the principles of operation of my invention, together With the device which I now consider to rep- 1929. Serial No. 367,528.
resent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the device shown is only illustrative, and that the invention may be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set out.
I claim-- 1. A toy including a handle, a base rotatan bly mounted on the handle, a scape wheel secured to the handle, a pallet pivotally mounted on the hase, a hammer carried by said pallet, and means on the base to receive the blows of said hammer.
2. A toy including a handle, a pin secured to and projecting from said handle, a scape Wheel secured to said pin, a base of sheet material pivotally mounted on the pin between the handle and the scape wheel, said base having upturned sides at opposite edges thereof, a pallet pivotally mounted on the base, and a hammer carried by said pallet adapted to strike the sides of the base.
JOHN A. GTTERBEIN.
