PATENT- OFFICE.
JAMES V. KEANE, OF PARK CITY, UTAH.
TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 739,184, dated September 15, 1903.
Application filed April 18, 1903.
T0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES V. KEANE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Park City, in the county of Summit and State of Utah, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys of that class by the operation of which a sound is produced; and the primary object of the same is to provide a device of this class which will serve as a source of amusement and pleasure.
The invention consists, primarily, of a resonant 0r sounding body having a handle and a striker or clapper reciprocatingly supported above the body and adapted to contact with the latter when the device is oscillated.
The invention further consists in the detail construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a perspective view of a toy embodying the features of the invention.
The numeral -1 designates a resonant body, which may be of wood or metal and has an upper flat face and a handle 2 depending therefrom and secured tothe center thereof. Rising from the upper fiat face of the body l at the center in transverse alinement are f ul- Crum-supports or posts, between which a when the stem is thrown into horizontal posiy tion or in a plane parallel with the flat face of the body on opposite sides of the posts or fulcrum-supports 3 the said .element 6 will have its opposite ends brought into positive engagement with the upper flat face of the body 1, as indicated by dotted lines.
As before indicated, the body may be formed l .may also be of similar material.
Serial No. 153,318. (No model.)
of resonant wood or metal, and the element 6 If the body and element are of wood, the sound emitted Will be of a 'click-clack7 nature, and if said parts are of metal a bell-like soundwill be produced. The nature of the sound will dependupon the rapidity of operation or oscillation of the toy, and to cause the toy to give forth sound the handle 2 is grasped and the body l oscillated in such direction as to throw the element 6 into contact with either extremity of said body. By practice a variety of sounds may be caused to emanate from the toy, and it is obvious that changes in the proportions and dimensions may be resorted to withoutl departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1. A toy comprising a resonant body having a depending central handle, and a single striker movably supported by and locatedl above the center of said body and. operative to contact with opposite extremities of the latter, the said striker being held at such elevation above the body and having proportions which will cause its opposite ends to squarely contact with the body when thrown down into horizontal position. 4
2. A toy comprising a resonant body with an upper smooth surface and a central depending handle, and a striking device removably held on the upper side at the center of said body, and operative to ultimately engage directly with the opposite upper surface of the bodynear the ends of the latter, a striking device being continually held above the body.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES V. KEANE.
