Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 3, 1914. Serial No. 829,221.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, Lnrorrron H. Forums and FRED W. BARKLEY, both of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tool-Chests; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
Our invention relates to tool chests and similar cases or cabinets, which are constructed with a view to readily transporting various articles and affording quick access to the same when they are to be used, and it has for its object to simplify such constructions, and to provide a chest that can be used with great facility and efficiency.
More specifically, the invention has for its further purpose the provision of means for retaining the several parts of the chest closed by a single locking means which cooperates with one of the movable parts, while the latter cooperates with one or more other movable parts to hold the same against movement.
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tool chest constructed in accord ance with one embodiment of our invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 --2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters throughout the several views indicate the same parts.
In the present construction, A designates the body portion of a tool chest or similar cabinet, which includes a stationary front wall B at the top, the body portion being open at the front beneath said wall B to receive a series of drawers or compartments C. These may be suitably separated or spaced and are movable into and out of the body portion through the front opening. The front opening is adapted to be covered, when the chest is closed, by a movable panel E which, in the present instance is formed with a flange or reduced portion 6 at the bottom adapted to engage a groove or recess a in the bottom of the chest, although it will be understood that the movable panel nay be hinged or otherwise attached at its lower edge to prevent removal from the body portion, while its upper edge is held by a locking means that will presently be described. Arranged immediately above the uppermost drawer or compartment C is a partition F forming the bottom of a stationary compartment in the rear of the front wall B, and G is cover portion hinged at g to the body portion and adapted to close the stationary compartment F. The cover portion G is held in place when closed by a lock 11 of any suitable form, carried by the front wall B and cooperating with the cover portion. It is desirable, also, to retain the panel E in closed position without necessitating the employment of an additional lock, and to accomplish the result by means of locking instrumentalities, which are controlled by the cover portion. To this end, in the present embodiment, we employ lock bolts-I which are housed in the stationary front wall B, each provided with a flange or shoulder 2' arranged in spaced relation to the upper end of the bolt, and adapted to engage the under side of a face plate 6 i is a recess to receive the spring 2' which is retained between the base of the recess and the flange 2', serving to hold the lock bolt normally raised and in the position shown in Fig. 8. In this position, the upper end of the lock bolt is raised above the stationary wall. 13, and when the cover portion G- is closed, it comes in contact with said upper end of the lock bolt,- and depresses it, causing its lower end to engage a recess 2' which is formed in the upper edge of the panel E. When the lock bolts I are thus depressed by the closing of the cover portion, the panel E is held both at its upper and lower edges and thus prevented from being removed from the chest.
The construction described affords an ex ceedingly unique and simple arrangement which can be readily manufactured, and is extremely eflicient in accomplishing the purposes in view, at the same time without detracting from the appearance of the chest and without limiting or interfering with the interior space where the tools and other articles are carried. With this arrangement, it is possible to construct the interior in the NEW YORK, A CORPO- -on the body portion and having engagement W1th said locking means When closed to move a it into engagement with thepanel, the cover all times.
most convenient manner, affording maximum storage capacity, and rendering the different compartments readily accessible at l/Ve claim as our invention: 7
1. In a chest, the combination with a body portion embodying a stationary front Wall, of a movable panel lying beneath the front wall and having its upper edge positioned adjacent thereto, a recess formed in the up- ;per edge of the panel, an aperture formed through the front Wall adapted to register with said recess, locking means positioned in the aperture and arranged to cooperate with the recess, and a cover portion located portion being movable independently of the locking means.
2. In a chest, the combination with a body Copies of this patent may be obtained for portion embodying a stationary front wall, of a movable panel lying beneath the front wall and having its upper edge positioned adjacent thereto, a recess formed in the upper edge of the panel, an aperture fOlD'lGd through the front Wall adapted to register with said recess, locking means located in the aperture comprising a spring held therein in engagement with the shoulder of a bolt adapted to cooperate With said recess, and a cover portion located on the body portion and having engagement with said bolt when closed to move it into the recess, the cover portion being movable independently of the locking means.
