CHARLES CARL, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOOL-CHEST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 10, 1908.
Application filed May 25, 1907. Serial No. 375,650.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES CARL, a subj ect of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tool- Chests, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tool chests, and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a convenient portable chest for small and valuable tools in which the various compartments of the chest are arranged for ready access to any of the tools.
Another object of the invention is to provide a portable tool chest which will occupy comparatively little space when open, and will expose a series of drawers in position for ready access to their contents.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tool chest made in accordance with my invention, said chest being closed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the chest with the sliding cover open and slid into the case at the top of the upper drawer. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view on the line 33, Fig. 2. Fig. 4c is an enlarged detail section of one corner of the chest and showing the manner of hinging the sliding top or cover. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view looking into the chest at one corner with the drawers and cover removed. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view on the lines 66, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, for a more particular description of my invention, the numeral l designates the top of the chest provided with a handle 2. The chest is madein proportion similar to the ordinary hand suit case, the ends 3 and the bottom and back be ing secured rigidly together and provided with corner braces t. Fitted in the chest are a series of drawers 5, one superposed upon the other and designed for containing various kinds of tools, said drawers each being provided with a handle 6 for withdraw ing the drawers from the chest. A cover 7 for the drawers is provided with oppositely disposed hooks 8 at the upper edge of the same, said hooks engaging pins 9 projecting inward from the ends 3 of the chest. By this means the cover may be raised and pushed into the chamber 11 between the inner wall of the top 1 and the upper portion of the top drawer 5. The lower drawer 13 is provided with a lock 13, the bolt 14: of which is adapted to engage the keeper 15 secured to the lower edge of the cover 7, as shown more particularly in Fig.
Springs 10, secured at opposite points on the front of the lower drawer 5, serve to push the cover 7 outward when it is unlocked to afford a hand hold in raising and pushing said cover into the chamber 11. At the end of the drawer 12 bolts 16 are provided, said bolts adapted to slide into sockets 17 in the ends 3 of the chest, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a chest made in accordance with my invention will he found very convenient and useful for persons required to carry a set of tools from place to place, and to give access to the various drawers containing the tools. and to provide means for securely locking the chest when desired.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is:
The herein described tool chest comprising an outer casing having a top and bottom. back and ends rigidly secured together and an open front side, a series of sliding draw ers fitted into said casing, a lower drawer heldin position by sliding bolts, and a cover for said sliding drawers, said cover being provided with hooks at the opposite ends of its inner side to engage inwardly projecting studs on the casing, whereby said cover may be slid in over the top drawer or withdrawn to cover the sliding drawers, said cover having a locking connection with said lower drawer.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES CARL. Witnesses:
Ancus'r GRAMS, FREDERICK CARL.
