To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, l VARREN F. WOL- HAUITER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes, Brooms, and the like, of which the following is a specification.

'My invention relates to brushes, brooms and the like and the object thereof is to provide a novel form of flexible connection between a brush head and the handle therefor, the same being the operative connection therebetween, and also to provide means for permitting of the use of interchangeablebrooms, brushes or the like, whereby a single handle serves to accommodate cleaning devices of different character or other cleaning devices of the same character.

The features of utility and advantage will be made apparent from the description hereinafter given. i

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective, partly in section, of my brush or broom; Fig. 2 a transverse section of abrush and its clip, illustrating a slight modification in the attachment of the spring to the clip, the handle being omitted; and Fig. 3 a detail illustrating a modified form of construction.

My invention includes generally a brush head, a handle and a flexible connection between the brush head and the handle.

The handle, which may be of any suitable construction, is indicated by D, the brush head is indicated by A, and the flexible connection between the two by C. e

The brush head, in the illustrated exemplification of my invention, includes a brush back a, bristles a secured therein, and a member B detachably secured to the back, and providing means for facilitating the removal of one brush and the substitution of another brush in the place thereof, which is of great advantage, in that it permits brushes of the same kind, or of different kinds or grades of fineness, to be readily substituted one for the other. The detachable member B may be constructed as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of sheet metal stamped to the desired shape and adapted to be slipped endwise on the brush back, said member being provided with inwardly turned flanges b 79 which engage longitudinal grooves in the sides of the brush back. Obviously, however, the detachable member B may be constructed of any desired material or in any desired manner or form and may be difierently secured upon the brush, as desired, Without departure from the spirit and scope of my invention and claims.

In order to lock and hold the member in its proper position on the brush back, suitable means are adopted, for instance, a pin 6 is secured in one side of the brush back so as to engage a hole in the member, as seen in Fig. 1.

The flexible connection or spring means which forms the operative connection between the handle and the brush head consists essentially of acoiled spring structure C arranged transversely of the aXis of the handle and longitudinally of the axis of the brush head. As shown in Fig. 1 this spring structure is formed into two coiled sections a disposed in axial alinement. The two adj acent ends of these sections are twisted together to form a shank c and inserted into the lower end of the handle which is provided with the. ferrule d and their outer ends are connected with the brush head through the medium of the clip B which has the eyes 7) to receive said'ends. However, as is now obvious from the foregoing description, the spring structure may be composed of a single rod or wire of spring metal which at its middle part may be twisted together to form said shank, so that insuch case the parts 0 would constitute one or more coils of a spiral spring.

This construction and arrangement of the springs serves to normally hold the-handle and brush head in the normal relative po sition indicated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. Inasmuch as the springs form the operative connection between the handle and brush head, the relative movements of the head and handle in the various directions will subject it to torsional and compression and expansion strains that tend to return the brush handle to normal relative position.

Furthermore, the spring coils serve to distribute the necessary strain throughout its entire length, thereby greatly lessening the liability to breakag I claim:

6. The combination of a brush-head, a handle therefor, a pair of coiled springs arranged end to end with their inner adjacent ends secured to the handle and their outer ends operatively connected in fixed manner with the head and forming the sole operative connection between the head and handle.

7. The combination of a brush back, a handle therefor, a member removably secured to the brush-back, and coiled spring means arranged longitudinally of the brush back and transversely of the axis of the handle, said spring means being secured respectively to the handle and to said member.

8. In combination with a brush head, a handle therefor, two intermediate coiled springs arranged end to end and disposed transversely of the axis of the handle, and each connected at its ends respectively with the head and handle and serving as the operative means for connecting the head with the handle.
