Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,888, dated June 13, 1871.
I, JOHN Prnmnn, of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Goal-Scuttles, of which the following is a specification:
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
Myinvention has relation to the attachment of the guard over the top of the spout of a coal-scuttle in such a manner that the said guard may be readily detached and reattached, as occasion may require; and consists in constructing the two side edges of the'guard each with a shoulder and slotted fianch, and the corresponding side edges of the hod each with a turn'button and a headed stud permanently attached thereto, as hereinafter described and shown; the object of my invention being to afiord increased facility and economy in the construction and original application of the guard to the coalscuttle, and increased facilities for the detachment of the guards for packing. and their subsequent reattachinent after end of the same. Each of the two ends of the guard A are bent inward so as to form a shoulder, a, which will fit down and rest upon its respective side edge I) of the scuttle, and thence downward, so as to produce a flanch,
, a, which will fit closely along against the inner-side of the scuttle. The forward end of each of the fianches a has a slot, 3, which, when the guard A is being applied, receives the headed stem of a stud, 4:, whichis riveted fast on the inner side of the scuttle, and thus the forward end of the said guard is held securely. The rear end of the guard is then pressed downward until the shoulders a a thereof rest their whole length along upon the side edges 2; of the scuttle when the rear end of the guard is firmly secured by means of two adjustable hooks, 5, which are secured in turn upon a pivot fired in the respective inner sides of the scuttle.
It will be understood, without further explanation, that the guard A can be readily detached and reattached at any time, and, consequently, that a series of the scuttles can he nested or packed compactly together, and their respective guards nested and packed in the last scuttle.
Claim.
I claim as my invention-- The shoulders a/ a and slotted fianches a a on the arched guard A, and the headed stud 4 and turn-button 5 on the corresponding inner sides of the hod B, constructed and arranged to operate together, substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.
