Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 2, 1915.
Application led December 21, 1914. Serial No. 878,276.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, BARNET RUDOLFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Bayonne, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washboards with Rubbing Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wash board with a rubbing attachment, and its novelty comprises means. whereby said attachment `can be swung to an open or closed position,
so that the clothes, fabric or other material which is to be scrubbed can easily be located upon or taken from the wash board.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents an elevation of a wash board with the rubbing attachment swung to an open position; Fig. 2 shows a top plan view of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 represents a view similar to Fig. 1 with the attachment in its closed position and Fig. 4 shows a section of Fig. 3 on the line 4, 4.
The wash board is shown with the corrugated body portion 20 connected to the side sills 21, 22 and the top cross piece 23. A pair of brackets 25 are fastened to the side sill 21, and a guide and hinge rod 26 is supported by said brackets. A pair of brackets 31 are fastened to the side sill 22 and a guide and latch rod 32 is supported by the brackets 3l.
A rubber indicated in its entirety by 34 has fastened to the body portion thereof the sheet of rubber 35 or other pliable material with the gripping projections 36. Hinges 37 with oblong openings 38 extend from the rubber 34 and are engaged by the hinge rod 26. A pair of latch springs 39 have each one end fastened to the back of the rubber 34. Each of the said latch springs has a leg 40 at right angles tothe body portion thereof, and a latch 41 extends from the leg 40. Each of the latch springs 39 bears against a projecting lug 42 extending from the back of the said rubber. A bracket 43 and a bracket 44 are fastened to the back of the rubber 34 and support the operating handle 45. With the bracket 44 are formed a pair of journal brackets 50,' in which latter is hinged the hinge rod 51. A pair of eccentrics 52 are fastened to the hinge rod 51 and are positioned to bear upon the latch springs 39. An operating handle 55 is fastened to the hinge rod 51.
. wash board, while the rubber 34 is located in its open portion as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and then the rubber 34 is swung to its closed position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The latches 414 will thereby lock themselves with the latch rod 32. The voperator then moves the rubber 34 up and down by means of the operating handle 45. The oblong openings 38 of the hinges 37 and the legs 40 of the springs 39 allow the adjustment of the rubber 34 to the proper distance from the body portion 2O of the wash board. To disengage the rubber 34 from its closed position, the operator moves the operating handle 55 in the direction of the arrow A, Fig. 4, which disengages the latch 41 from the latch rod 32 and the rubber 34 can then be swung to its open position. When the rubber 34 is moved gripping projections 36 engage and grip the clothes 56, so that they are moved against the projections of the body portion 20 of the wash board.
Having described my invention what I desire to secure by Letters Patent and claim is z 1. In a wash board the combination of a guide and hinge rod extending from one of the side sills thereof, a guide and latch rod extending from the other side sill of the 4wash board, a rubber slidablyhinged on the hinge rod and means to slidably lock said rubber with said latch rod.
2. In a wash board the combination of a guide and hinge rod extending from one of the side sills thereof, a guide and latch rod extending from the other side sill of the wash board, a rubber for the wash board,
hinges with oblong openings extending from said rubber and said oblong openings engaging said guide and hinge rod, and a latch spring with one end fastened to said rubber and having a leg at right angles to the body thereof and having a latch at its end,
v gage the` latch rod when the rubber is l0- cated in its closed position, an operating handle and means between said handle and said latch springs to disengage the latter from the latch rod.
4. In a Wash boardthe combination of a guide and hinge rod extending from one of the side sills thereof, a guide and latch rod extending from the other side of. the sill of the Wash board, a rubber slidabl7 hinged on the hinge rod, the rubber comprising a body portion With a sheet of iexible material having gripping projections attached thereto, a pair of latch springs'extending from the rubber, each latch spring having a latch to engage the latch rod and means tordisengage the latches from the latch rod.
Signed at Bayonnein the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey this 16th day of December A. D. 1914. I Y
BARNET RUDOLFF.
