Description
beyond the top and sides WILLIAM A. WHEATLEY, OF MIDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
EDUCATIONAL RECORD-BOOK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, .WILLIAM A. l/VH AT- LEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Educational Record-Books, of which the follow,- ing is a specification.
This invention relates to a book which is designed to assist teachers of primary, intermediate and grammar grades of common schools, and instructors of high schools and other educational institutions, in planning and assigning the several-topics of study for the dayor week as the case may be, and re cording their observations of the results accomplished.
The object of the invention is to provide a book of this character which is inexpensive in construction and thereby can be supplied at a low cost, and which contains all the necessary matter conveniently arranged so that the desired data or memoranda for a complete record can be easily entered in the places provided with a minimum expenditure of time and exertion. In attaining this object the cover or title page is made somewhat larger than the filling leaves, and the book is bound so that the cover or title page, on each side and at the top, extends a considerable distance beyond the edges of the leaves. The marginal surfaces on the inside of the cover or title page of the leaves are ruled so as to provide spaces for the desired subjects and directions, and the leaves are ruled vertically and horizontally so as to provide on each page spaces for the assignments and notations, which correspond to and cooperate with, both horizontally and vertically, the marginal spaces on the sides and top of the cover or title page.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows a plan of an opened book which embodies this invention. Fig. 2 is a view looking at the side edge of the closed book. Fig. 3 is a view looking at the bottom edge of the closed book.
The cover 1 of the book may be stifl or flexible, and any convenient outline and size. The filling 2, of any kind of paper and any number of leaves may be permanently or removablv bound in the cover as desired. The filling is somewhat smaller than the cover and is preferably located therein so that at whatever page the book is opened Specification of Letters Patent.

there will be on the inside of the cover a marginal surface 3 on each side between the side edges of the leavesand the side edges of the cover, and a marginal surface 4; at the top between the upper edges of the leaves and the upper edges of the cover. The exposed cover margins on the sides are ruled with horizontal lines to divide the surfaces into a vertical row of spaces and the exposed cover margins at the top are ruled with vertical lines to divide the surfaces into a horizontal row of spaces. In the several inside marginal spaces on the cover at the sides matter may be printed which will indicate the place and date and the several subjects of study, such as Reading and literature, Spelling and word study, Grammar or language, Arithmetic, Geography, History and civics. The matter on the corresponding spaces on the opposite sides of the cover may be the same or different as desired. In the several inside marginal spaces on the cover at the top matter may be printed which will indicate the work planned or assigned for a period, either a day or week, and notes and instructions as will be of assistance, such as Pupils needing individual help. All of the leaves of the filling are blank except that they are ruled on both sides with horizontal lines that coincide with the horizontal lines at the sides of the cover, and with vertical lines that coincide with the vertical lines at the top of the cover. This divides the pages into spaces that correspond with the spaces on the extended marginal surfaces of the cover at the top and side edges. Qf course instead of having the matter printed directly on the cover, a title page that is larger that the filling may be used and the matter printed on the exposed margins of this title page in the same manner as if printed on the cover. In a book constructed in this manner the cover does all of the work .or gives all of the instructions for every page of the filling, both dot n and across, for with the single printing above the leaves reading downward indicates the correct spaces for all of the subjects reading crosswise for each and every page. If it is desired to change one of the subjects, it is only necessary to make the change once on the cover, it is not required to make the change on each page as it is with the prior books which have been provided for this class of work.
Such a book as herein described is much cheaper to manufacture than the books in 7 common use, and it is of great convenience for a teacher or instructor as it saves time and labor in planning the work and record ing the results. If the filling is removably bound into the cover, several sets of filling may be used with a single cover.
The invention claimed is:
A teachers record book comprising a cover having a number of ruled spaces containing printed'general instructions or indicating matter on the inside along the margin at the top edges and a number of ruled spaces containing printed general instructions or indicating matter on the inside along the margins at the side edges, and a removable filler of blank pages that is Copies of this patent may be obtained for smaller than the cover so that the printed marginal spaces at the top and sides of the cover will be exposed when the book is open, the leaves of said filler having ruled spaces for the insertion of specific'notations, that aline vertically with the spaces at the top of the cover and aline horizontally With-the spaces at the sides of the cover, whereby specific notations on the several leaves of the filler may be read downward with relation to the matter at the top of the cover and may be read across with relation to the matter at the sides of the cover.
