Description

T. S. STEWART.
INTERCHANGEABLE COLLAR BUTTON AND SKIRT SUPPORTER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY-8.1914- Patented Oct. 26, 1915.
WITNESSES AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA c.
THERON S. STEWART, TOLEDO, OHIO.
INTERGHANGEABLE COLLAR-BUTTON AND SKIRTSUPPORTER. U
amie.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THERON citizen of the United States, ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented new and, useful Improvements in Interchangeable GOllZtP-Bllt- S. STEWART, a
' tons and Skirt-Supporters, of which the following is a specification. 1
My invention relates to a collar button, and has for its object to produce a convenient device of the kind that is simple and economical in construction and is readily attached to and detached from the neck band of a shirt, and to which the back of a collar is readilv attached, and that when used for a standing collar is also adapted to secure both the collar and necktie-from rising at the back of the neck.
A further object is to provide a fastener of the kind and for the purpose, that, when attached to the neck band, is stable in position and conforms to the curve of the neck and produces no pressure thereon.
A further object is to provide a device of the kind that is also adapted to be interchangeably used with the waist band of a shirt waist as a skirt supporter.
I accomplish these objects by the construction hereinafter described and illustrated in the drawings, in which Figure 1 is an end perspective view of a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 illustrates its primary position in attaching it to the neck band of a shirt. Fig. 4 is an edge view of the same attached to a neck band, and illustrating the initial position of attaching a collar thereto. Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the collar attachment completed. Fig. 6 is a back view of the same, and Fig. 7 illustrates its use for supporting a skirt.
In the drawings 1 designates a fastener and supporter constructed in accordance with my invention, and comprising a single piece of sheet metal, T shape in form, and struck up in a die to slightly curve the cross bar 2 and to cut through the flat stern por tion and form the central stem 3 in the plane of the central portion of the bar, and the stem 4:, offset as shown in Fig. 1, in a plane parallel with the stem 3. The ends 5 of the cross bar 2 are preferably rounded, as shown in Fig. 2, and provided with perforations 6 for a purpose hereinafter described. Thus constructed, the fastener 1 is attached to the v Specification of Letters Patent.
residing at To neck band 7 of a shirt by inserting the device with the incurved face of the bar 2 outward and inserting the stem 4 upward between the outer portion 8 and the inner portion '9 of the band 7 and through the button hole 10, with the stem 3 on the outside of the portion 8 and then turning the free end of the stem 4 downward in an arc (as shown by the arrow in Fig. 3), into the position shown in Fig. 5, with the bar 2 uppermost between the outer and inner sections 8 and 9 of the neck band 7, and with the stem 3 extending downward between the portions 8 and 9, and the stem t extending downward through the button hole on the outside of the outer portion 8. In this position it Will endportions of the bar permit only slight lateral movement of the stems 3 and 4.
The collar is secured at the back by inserting the free end of the stem 4: through the back button hole of the collar, and then raising the back of the collar until the lower margin of the button hole engages the offset of the stem 4. When the ends of the collar are buttoned to the front collar button, the back of the collar is secured against rising and against detachment from the stein 4 by downward movement.
When the collar is attached the stems 3 and 4c are adapted to form a bight in the outerportion 8 of the band 7 which increases the stability of the fastener 1. The thinness and curve of the bar 2 adapts the fastener to be inserted in position between the folds of the neck band without producing any pressure on the back of the neck when the collar is attached.
The fastener 1 is also adapted without for a collar button, and with the stem 4 extending through the button hole with the free end upward. So provided, an inner fold 11 of the waist band 12 of the skirt Patented Uct. ac, 19155. Application filed May 8, 1914. Serial No. 837,103.
having button has located to "receive the stem 4c, is hooked on the stems 4 With the stems extending between the inner and outer portions of the waist band 12 of the skirt, in Which position the fasteners 1 are entirely concealed from view and so support the skirt from thewa-ist band of the shirt waist that separation therefrom by reason of the Weight of the skirt is prevented.
The fasteners 1 are readily removable from "shirt waists requiring laundrying,
For use of waists of unwashable material 7 the fastene'rsmay bepernianently secured to inner folds of the band 7 Copies of this patent may he obtained for conveniently attachable to the neck band of a shirt and when so attached is firmly held against lateral movement in position for attaching the collar thereto,; and that when the collar is attached produces nocha-fing or undue pressure on the backof the neck,
and that is also adapted to be conveniently used as a skirt supporter.
What I claim to be new is- In an interchangeable collar button and skirt support, the combination with an elongated base plate of a bifurcated tongue formed integral with the plate central of the length of the plate, and projecting from one of the long edges of the plate, one bifurcation of the tongue being in the plane of the plate and the other being oiiset at its connection with the plate by a shoulder into a plane parallel with the plane of the other bifurcation, and one of the bifurcations be- 4;:
ing formed of what was originally the longitudinal central portion of the other bifurcation.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Toledo, Ohio, this 29th day of April,'191l, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
