COMBINED DENTAL PROP AND MIRROR.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Met. 19, 1915.
Application filed March 15, 1915. Serial No. 14,525.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES E. MAYER. a citizen of the United States, residing at Bluefield, in the county of Mercer and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Dental Props and Mirrors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in combined mouth props and dental mirrors and comprises a simple and efficient device of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
ll illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my invention. Fig. 2 isa side elevation.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A and A designate respectively an upper and a lower lip shield,
and B, B designate portions of the frame which are bent to form loops C, the ends of which are fastened to the upper lip shield A, and at the point, designated by letter C, the frame is bent at acute angles for the purpose of preventing the prop from slipping upon the teeth. The portion of the prop connected to the lower shield consists of the portions E which are similar to the parts B before described and each is bent to form a loop E, while the portions E are bent at acute angles at points designated by letter E for the same purpose as described of the parts bent at B, that is in order to prevent the prop from slipping upon the teeth of the lower jaw. v
H is an outer ring forming a portion of the frame and an inner ring, designated by letter I, is provided with countersunken holes for the reception of the screws G, the
heads of which are mounted in said countersunken holes and engage threaded apertures in the ring H and form pivots for said ring I. i
A mirror, designated by letter N, is provided with diametrically opposite pivots LT connecting the same with the ring H midway between the pivotal points of the latter, thus allowing the mirror to have a universal pivotal movement as will be readily understood.
In adapting the device for use, cotton is inserted in the loops and against the lip shields, after which the shields are placed against the upper and lower lips with the acute angle portions of the frame passing over the edges of the teeth of the upper and lower jaw and which would position the mirror within the mouth and so located that it may be tilted'at any angle whereby the operator may conveniently see any portion of the interior of the mouth.
By the peculiar construction of dental prop made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted the rows of cotton may be readily removed and replaced at will without removing the prop from the mouth of the patient.
What I claim to be new is:
1. A combined dental prop and mirror comprising lip shields, a frame having arms which are bent to form loops integral with said shields, loops adapted for the reception of cotton, said frame having portions bent at angles, and a swiveled mirror mounted upon said frame.
2. A combined dental prop and mirror comprising lip shields, a frame having arms which are bent to form loops and secured to said shields, loops adapted for the reception of cotton, said frame bent at acute angles and extended rearwardly, said frame having a circular outlined portion, a ring swiveled to the frame, and a mirror swiveled to the ring. a
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES ERLE MAYER.
