' 0 r in" g United States Patent MOUTH SAVER Ivan von Sosdy, Canas, Gordas Via Golfito, Costa Rica, assignor of part interests to Mary Szacsvay, Elizabeth Mohaupt, Stephen De Harasthy, and Calvin W. Prem Application May 21, 1956, Serial No. 586,080
4 Claims. (Cl. 128-136) My invention relates to a mouth saver which has for its purpose the prevention of the premature falling out of the teeth, and treatment of gums, tongue, throat, tonsil and mouth diseases through the bacterial and regenerative process of the sun-rays, particularly the ultra-violet rays.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a device which is capable of being held in the mouth and while the mouth is held open permits thev inside of the mouth cavity to be exposed to certain desirable rays, particularly ultra-violet rays which are filtered through a membrane.
Another object of my invention is to provide a mouth saver which may be used as a preventative, that is as sun-bathers protect their eyes with sun glasses, the premature falling out of teeth may be prevented by using the mouth saver.
Another object of my invention is to provide a therapeutic device whereby diseases of the mouth, gums, and throat may be treated, with the use of filtered sunlight.
The device is especially usable in the treatment of bleeding gums, inflammation of the gums, inflammation of the mouth tissues, stomatitis ulcerosa, trench mouth,-
phlegrnonosa, tuberculosis of the tonsil, diphtheria, glossitis acuta diifusa, and ulcer in the mouth, etc.
This device is to be used in addition to the regular specifics which are normally indicated for the various conditions described above.
Other objects and objects relating to details of construction and economies of operation will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow. In one instance, I have accomplished the objects of my invention by the device shown and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of the human face showing the mouth device in position and through which light rays are passed.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of my device.
Figure 3 is a view in right side elevation of my device.
Figure 4 is a top plan view of my device.
Figure 5 is a rear view of the device shown in Figure 1 and to an enlarged scale.
In the drawings the same reference numerals refer to the same parts throughout the several views.
In general my invention comprises a metal frame having a plastic sheet fastened thereto. The metal frame is provided with a pair of flanges, one at the top and the other at the bottom, which are adapted to rest against the upper and lower lip respectively. When the flanges are properly positioned the plastic material covers the opening of the mouth cavity. My invention comprises a therapeutic device for treating the interior of a humans mouth with ultraviolet rays, which consists of a substanice tially open rectangular frame having spaced upper anc' lower cross members to accommodate the bite of the upper and lower front teeth, with a filter member attached to the ends of the frame to filter rays other than ultraviolet rays.
Thus by positioning the device in the mouth and then by exposing'this portion of the face to the desired light rays the filtered rays are permitted to enter into the mouth and accomplish their curative work.
My invention consists of a metal frame 10, which is formed by a piece of wire and has two upper tie bars 11 and 12 one provided at each side.
The upper tie bars extend downwardly and are joined at their ends by a pair of brace cross members 13 and 14. Afixed to the brace or cross members are flanges. One flange 17 is provided at one end and another flange 18 at the other end against which the upper and lower gums may rest. The brace or cross members 13, and 14, and tie bars 11 and 12 form an open substantially rectangular frame to accommodate the bite of the upper and lower front teeth.
Provided in the metal frame is a piece of transparent material 19, through which the light rays are filtered. It can be readily understood that various rays may be filtered into the mouth cavity dependent upon the type of filter which is used.
My invention is specifically pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A therapeutic device for treating the interior of a humans mouth with ultraviolet rays, said device comprising an open substantially rectangular frame having spaced upper and lower cross members to accommodate the bite of the upper and lower front teeth, a membrane attached to the ends of the frame to filter rays other than the ultraviolet, whereby when the frame is held in ones teeth the mouth is open but covered by the membrane to permit the passage of ultraviolet rays into the mouth.
2. A device as in claim 1 in which the upper and lower cross members are curved upwardly and downwardly so as to be behind the teeth when in the bite thereof.
3. A device as in claim 2 in which the frame is provided forwardly of the upper and lower cross members with flanges that are engaged by the lips when the device is in place.
4. A device for filtering sun rays into the mouth cavity, comprising a pair of tie bars, a pair of brace members joined to said tie bars, one of said brace members being fixed at its ends to the ends of the tie bars, the other of said brace members being fixed at its ends to the other ends of said tie bars, each of said brace members curved away from its respective tie bar, a pair of flanges secured to said tie bars and lying adjacent to said braces, and a piece of sun ray filtering material attached to said tie bars and covering the space between said tie bars and said flanges.
