Description

F. E. ENGLISH.
BANDEAU FOR HATS AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED APR.I2.1915.
1,157,093. Patented. 001.19, 1915.
INVENTOR.
FERDINAND 1:. ENGLISH.
' gently bent around, as illustrated in Fig. 4,
with elastic strands then in graduated stretched to unstretched condition as they innermost from wire or outermost lie . strand 6.
' The bandeau material, if manufactured in long so-called ribbon or strip form orif otherwise necessary, is now crosswise cut lnto proper lengths to fit the particular head-size or portion 3 of the hat A with which they are to be operativelyused, and when so cut the same may be easily bent around into approximately ring or elliptical form to fit within the hat, the meeting ends of the cut portion being secured together in as illustrated in Fig. 6.
any desired or suitable manner, as, for instance. by means of a sheet metal clamp 7 suitably clinched thereupon and particularly into engagementwith wire strand 6 thereof,
7 The bandeau B in finished approximately ring or elliptical form is now ready to be in-' serted into the hat A, and in its finished form it will be evident that-the wire outer-X *most strand 6 thereof imparts to the bandeau sufficient stiffness orrigidity to take or resist the graduated inward pull of the elastic strands 5, and that, while the elastic strands 5 adiacent wire strand 6 are in relatively stretched condition, the inner strands 5 are in relatively unstretched condition, the bandeau'at its internal periphery being consequently elastically free to give or yield laterally relatively to the flat plane thereof.
In use or operation, the bandeau B is suitably. as b means of mall sharpened staples or the like 8 engaging wire strand 6 and having their legs projecting through and clinched upon the hat. as illustrated in Fig. f2, attachedwithin headeportion 3 of the hat A preferably at or closely adjacent its lower or outer edge, as seen in Figs. 1 and 2, or, as it might be said. at or ad acent the rim or mouth thereof. Being so attached and se- ;cured, and extending continuously around,
within the hat. the bandeau is normally, due to its described construction, disposed fiat- Wise throughout its width atanangle inwardlv relatively to the head-portion 3 of the hat. or. as it might be described. is normallv flatwise disposed approximately horizontally withinthe area of the opening of the head-portion 3 of the hat, as clearly seen in Figs. land 2, bandeau B thereby yield- B will yieldingly engage the head without unduly binding thereupon and serve not only as a soft elastic -cushion, so to speak, for the hat upon the head, but also as a retaining or securing member therefor. The hat provided with my new bandeau B is thus yieldingly self-securing upon the head, the use of pins or the like for such purpose, in the case of womens and girls" hats, being obviated.
From the foregoing, it will hence be seen that a. so-called soft or stiff hat provided or equipped with my new bandeau is readily capable of interchangeably neatlyand comfortablv fitting heads of various sizes'within certain limits depending upon-the predetermined si7e of the head-portion of the hat andthe width and elasticity of the bandeau.
I am aware that minor changes in the form. construction, arrangement. and combination of the several parts of my new bandeau may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the natureand principle of m invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An approximately ring-shaped bandeau for hats and the like, the same having a body-portion comprising an, outermost non-elastic, but laterally resilient warp strand, an inner elastic warp strand normally approximately concentric with said outermost strand, and a plurality of fabric woof threads.
2. An approximately ring-shaped bandeau for hats and the like, the same having a body-portion comprising an outermost non-elastic, but laterally resilient warp strand, a plurality of inner elastic warp strands normally approximately concentric with one another and with said outermost strand, and a plurality of fabric woof threads. I
3. An approximatel ring-shaped bandeau for hats and the like. the same having a bodv-portion comprising an outermost non-elastic, but laterally resilient warp strand, a plurality of inner elastic warp strands normally approximately concentric Warp strand, a plurality of inner elastic Warp strands normally approximately concentric With one another and With said outermost strand, and a plurality of fabric Woof threads, said elastic Warp'strands being in graduated stretched to relatively unstretched condition as they lie innermost from said:
outermost strand. I 5. An approximately ring-shaped ban- Gcples of this patent may be obtained for dean for hats and the like, thesame having a Woven body-portion integrally comprising an outermost laterally resilient spring-steel Warp strand, a plurality of inner elastic Warp strands normally approximately concentric with one another and with said outermost strand, andaplurality of fabric Woof threads, said elastic Warp strands ,be- 4 ing in graduated stretched to're latively unstretched condition as they lie innermost from said outermost strand, and means for securing the bandeau invapproximately ring-- shaped form.
