Description

I. CLEMENTS.-
Improvement in Eye-Glasses.-
No. 115,574. Patented June 6,1371J gumm ISAAC GLEMENTS, 013 FORT ANN, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN EVE-GLASSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 115,574, dated June 6, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC .CLnaIENrs, of Fort Ann, in the county of Washington and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Eye-Glasses; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
It is the object of this invention to remedy a I difficulty experienced by many people in keeping eye-glasses in proper position upon the consisting of the bows B B and the spring 0.
l) D are the self-adjusting bearing-plates,connected with the bows B B by a flexible joint so that they will conform to the shape of the nose. These plates D D I prefer to be concave, as seen in the drawin g, so that the glasses may be supported in whole or in part by atniospheric pressure. I also prefer to make the bearing-plates of some elastic material, as India rubber; but I do not confine myself to the concave form, nor to any particular material of which to make them.
Metallic plates connected with the hows B B by a flexible joint, so that they can adjust themselves to the sides of the nose, may obviate the difficulties hitherto experienced. The selt adjustingplatesgive an increased area of bearing-surface, so that the glasses are quite secure on the nose. They will not get away or need readjusting every minute, as eye-glasses frequently do when the bows only are relied upon as the bearing-surface.
My improvement enables any person with failing sight to use, without trouble, these most convenient aids to the eye.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- In combination with eyeglasses the selfadjusting plates D D, substantially as and for the purposes described.
