Description
E. RUSSELL. Improvement in Lamp-Shade Supporters.
Patented May 30 EDWIN nnssntt, or warnnnnnr, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR ro nnrsnnr AND FRANCIS w. PLATT, or sans PLACE.
IMPRQVEMENT IN LAMP=SHAE $L PPRTER$.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,527, dated May 30, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN RUSSELL, of YVaterbury,.in the countyof New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Lamp-Shade Supporter; and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention consists in the attachment of the supporting-arm of theshade-holder to the lamp-collar by means of a ring-clamp provided on the said arm, and a clamping-screw passing through a slotted portion of the said arm for the purpose of tightening the ring upon the lamp-collar.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a lamp-reservoir with my improved shade-supporter attached to its collar, the supporting-arm and its clamping-ring being in section. Fig. 2 is a plan of the lamp-reservoir and the attached s upportin g-arm.
A is the shade-holder,consisting of a ring of metal grooved all around its upper face for the reception of the lower edge of the shade. B is the vertical rod or stem attach ed rigidly to the ring, and having its attachment stren gthened by oblique braces a. 0 is the supportingarm attached to the exterior of the collar D, which is ordinarily provided on the top of the reservoir E- for the reception of the burner.
This arm is provided at its outer end with a vertical socket, I), through which the rod or stem passes freely, and it has screwed into it a set'screw, c, which, being screwed up tightly against the rod or stem B, secures it at any height to which it may be adjusted in the socket 1), according to the desired height of the shade above the lamp. This arm is of suitable length to bring the shade-holder A to a position concentric with the lamp-collar. The supporting-arm (J is made in the same piece with a ring, 01, of a size, in its normal condition, to slip easily over the lamp-collar; and from the interior of this ring a slot, e, extends the greater portion of the length of the arm. Through this slotted portion of the arm, near the ring, is inserted a set-screw, f, which passes loosely through the portion of the arm on one side of the slot, and screws into a tapped hole in the portion of the arm on the other side of the slot.
By screwing up this screw, after the ring is placed over the lamp-collar, the portions of the arm on opposite sides of the slot are drawn toward each other, and the ring is contracted upon and made to clamp so tightly the lam pcollar as to secure the arm rigidly thereto, and so form a rigid and firm support for the shade-holder.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The arrangement of the ring 61, having a slotted arm, 0, and tension-screw f, socket b, and set-screw c, for supporting a shade-holder by attachment to the lamp-collar D, substantially as shown and described.
. Y EDWIN RUSSELL. Witnesses:
