FOLDING TABLE.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 28, 1915.
Application 'filed February 1, 1915. Serial No. 5,392.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK R. DEHU'LLU, a citizen of the United States of America, residin r at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and btate of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Tables, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to portable tables, and the objects of my invention are to provide a table that can be easily and quickly folded to form a compact structure which can be conveniently carried, and to furnish a table of this class with simple and'effectable within the same when'folded.
I attain the above and other objects by a simple, durable and inexpensive structure that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1. is a perspective view of the table set up for use; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the table folded; Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the table showing the legs detached and in a packed position; Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views of the upper end of a leg; and Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view of a portion of the table showing the drawer thereof withdrawn and partly broken away.
The table top comprises two rectangular board sections 1 and 2 having longitudinal edges thereof hinged together, as at 3. The board sections 1 and 2 are provided with depending longitudinal side boards 4 and 5,
- the former havlng a drawerway 6 and a hook 7, while the latter has an eye 8 and a suitable handle 9.
The board section 1 has depending triangular end boards 10 and 11 and the section 2 has triangular end boards 12, said boards adjoining the side boards 4 and 5 and braced at their adjoining edges by corner or filler pieces 13. The end boards 10,11 and 12 provide inclined or angularly disposed edges 14 and the edges 14 of the end boards 10 and 11 are adapted to abut the edges 15 of the end boards 12 when the table is folded by swinging one of the board sections toward the other. This is best shown in Fig. 2 where it will be observed that the end and side boards of one board section abut the end and Sideboards of the other board section therebyproviding a compartment within the folded table. By placing the hook 7 in the eye 8 the folded structure can be conveniently carriedby the handle 9.
Mounted in the corner pieces 13, contiguous to the lower ends thereof, are inwardly projecting bolts 15 provided with adjustable wing nuts '16. The bolts and nuts constitute ready means for attaching legs 17 to the table top.
The legs 17 are of less length than the board sections 1 and 2 and the upper end of each leg is slotted or bifurcated, as at 18 to receive a bolt 15 and provided with flat faces 19 and 20, the former abutting a corner piece 13 and the latter providing clearance for a winged thumb nut 16. The flat face 19 has a metallic insert 21 and it is against this insert that the winged thumb nut 16 is screwed to bind and lock the upper ends of the table legs against the side and end boards. The upper end of each table leg has a dowel pin 22 adapted to engage in a socket 23 provided therefor in the bottom side of each board section. v
In order that the legs can be packed in the table, without any danger of the sagne rattling or becoming accidentally displaced, the end board 10 has an undercut 24 to receive the small ends of the table legs and the large ends thereof are held by a block 25 undercut to receive the dowel pins 22. The table legs are assembled against the side boards 5 of the board section 1 and are held against lateral displacement by a pivoted keeper 26 at the end of the block 25.
Slidable in the drawerway 6 of the side board 4 is a drawer 27 having a rear inclined wall 28 provided with a dovetail groove 29 to receive a dovetail tongue 30, carried by the bottom side of the board section 2. The drawer 27 has a stationary cover section 31 and hinged cover section'32, said cover sections closing the drawer 27 when removed from the table. To retain the drawer in a closed position when the table is folded and thereby preclude any possibility of the same becoming accidenrenders it ideal for camping purposes, be-
tally displaced the inner side of the side board 4 is provided with a pivoted l'at'ch or keeper 33 which is swung into a kerf or groove 34 in the side of the drawer.-
To hold the board sections 1 and Z'in an open position, the bottom side of the board section 1 is provided with a pivoted cleat 35 that can be swung transversely of the board sides there is sufficient space inthe foldedtable for camping paraphernalia. V
While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my inventiomit is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A portable tablecompri'sing hinged top sections, side and end boards carried thereby, the end boards having inclined edges merging into the hinged edges. of the top sections and adapted to abut whensaid top sections are folded, legs detachably connected to said side and end boards and adapted to be housed between said hinged top sections and held against the inner side of one of said top section s when detached, means adapted to hold said top sections folded, and means carried by the top section containing the ta-blelegsoto facilitate carrying said table. I
In testimony whereof I afiix mysignature in presence of two witnesses. v
