Description

Sept. 6, 1966 J, HENRY 3,271,091
PORTFOLIO COLORING KIT Filed April 26, 1965 JEN N I E HEN RY INVENTOR.
AGENT United States Patent Oflice Patented Sept. 6, 1966 3,271,091 PORTFOLIO COLORING KIT Jennie Henry, 425 W. Douglas Drive, Midwest City, Okla.
Filed Apr. 26, 1965, Ser. No. 450,826 4 Claims. (Cl. 312-231) The present invention relates to portfolios and more particularly to a childs coloring kit.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a portfolio-type case for the amusement of children while traveling.
Another object is to provide a sectionalized table-like writing surface which may be supported by the users lap for writing, drawing or coloring wherein the sections forming the writing surface may be folded to form a portfolio.
Another object is to provide a device of this class which includes means on one of its surfaces for holding paper, pencils and crayons, or the like, in a concealed position when the writing surface is folded to a collapsed position.
Still another object is to provide a childs coloring kit which is formed of durable light weight materials and includes handle means for transporting the kit.
The present invention accomplishes these and other objects by hingedly connecting two rectangular relatively thin sections for folding toward and away from each other and having writing or coloring supply holding means secured to each of the sections.
Other objects will be apparent from the following de cription when taken in conjunction with the accompanying single sheet of drawings, wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the device;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective view of the device when in opened position;
FIGURE 3 is a vertical cross sectional view taken substantially along line 3- 3 of FIG. 2 and inverted; and,
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view, to a different scale, of the device in writing position.
Like characters of reference designate like parts in those figures of the drawings in which they occur.
In the drawings:
The reference numeral indicates the device, as a whole, which is rectangular in overall configuration. The device 10 comprises a pair of relatively thin rectangular sections 12 and 14 integrally joined or bonded in edge abuttable position to one side surface of a coextensive flexible panel 15 which spans the juncture of the two sections 12 and 14 at their abutting edges to form a hinge .16.
As shown in FIG. 1, a longitudinal marginal edge surface portion of each section 12 and 14, along the abutted edges, is not bonded to the adjacent surface of the panel 15 so that the sections 12 and 14 may be positioned in spaced-apart parallel relation.
A rectangular socket or pocket 18 is connected to the surface 20 of the panel 15 opposite an end portion of the section 12. The pocket 18 is formed by a relatively thin rectangular wall panel or section of material 22 joined at its ends and along one side by walls 24 and 25 to the surface 20 adjacent the hinge 16 and adjacent marginal edges of the panel 15 thus leaving the opposite side of the pocket 18 open for the reception of a pad of writing or coloring paper, or the like indicated by the dotted lines 26. Alternatively, the panel 22 may have its edges stitched or bonded to the adjacent end and side edges of the section 12.
At one end portion of the section 14 and spaced inwardly of its adjacent end and side edges the material forming the panel 15 is upset or deformed outwardly away from the section 1 4 to form a box-like pencil and crayon holding socket or container 30.
An opening 32, coinciding with the container 30 is formed through the section 14. A ridge or ledge 34, se-
cured to the surface of the section 14 opposite the panel 15, extends along one end and opposing sides of the opening 32 to form a dove tail groove for slidably receiving a lid or cover 36 for opening and closing the container 30. A handle 40 is formed adjacent the free side edge of each of the sections 12 and 14. Each of the handles 40 -is formed by cutting a D-shaped aperture through the panel 15 and respective section 12 and 14 to form a hand grip portion 42.
Operation 7 In operation the device may be carried by the handles 40 when in the position shown by FIG. 1 wherein the free end of the container lid 36 is positioned upwardly. The papers 26 are held within the pocket 18 by the juxtaposition of the members 12 and 14.
When it is desired to use the device for writing or coloring the sections 12 and 14 are hingedly spread apart and positioned with the surface 20 of the panel 15 downwardly so that the hingedly connected edges of the sections 12 and 14 are in abutting relation, as at 50 (FIGS. 2, 3 and 4) thus positioning the outer surfaces of the sections 12 and 14 in a common horizontal plane (FIGS. 3 and 4). One or more of the sheets of paper 26 is removed from the pocket 18 and placed on the writing surface. The lid 36 may then be manually slid laterally of the section 14 to expose pencils or crayons therein without spilling the same.
After using the device the sections 12 and 14 are again lfolded toward each other to the position shown in FIG. 1.
Obviously the invention is susceptible to some change or alteration without defeating its practicability, and I therefore do not wish to be confined to the preferred embodiment shown in the drawings and described herein, further than I am limited by the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A portfolio coloring kit, comprising: a pair of rectangular sections hingedly connected together in edge abutting relation along one side edge to form a planar writing surface when in opened position; a pocket secured to the surface, opposite the writing surface, of one said section at one of its end portions, said pocket opening toward the opposite end of said one section; a container secured to the surface, opposite the writing surface, at the end portion of the other said section diagonally opposite said pocket, said other section having an opening exposing said container; a lid slidably connected to the surface of said other section for opening and closing the opening; and a handle formed on the free edge of each said section opposite the hingedly connected edges.
2. A portfolio coloring kit, comprising: an identical pair of rectangular sections hingedly connected together in edge abutting relation along one side edge to form a coextensive planar writing surface when in one position and forming a portfolio when folded toward each other; a pocket secured to the surface, opposite the writing surface, of one said section at one of its end portions, said pocket comprising a wall panel disposed in, spaced parallel relation with respect to said one section by one side wall and opposing end walls; a rectangular box-like container secured to the surface, opposite the writing surface, at the end portion of the other said section diagonally opposite said pocket, said other section having an opening communicating with said box-like container; a lid slidably secured to the surface of said other section around the opening for opening and closing said box-like container; and a handle formed adjacent the free edge of each said section opposite its hingedly connected edge.
3. A portfolio coloring kit, comprising: a pair of rectangular sections lying in a common plane in edge abutting relation forming a Writing surface; a panel coextensive with and underlying said sections, said panel being secured to each said section and bridging the adjacent edge portion of the abutted edges thereof forming a hinge permitting said sections to be disposed in parallel spaced-apart relation; a pocket secured to the surface of said panel opposite one end portion of one said section, said pocket being open toward the other end portion of said one section; a container formed by said panel opposite the end portion of the other said section diagonally opposite said pocket, said other section having an opening communicating with said container; a lid slidably connected to said other section for opening and closing said container; and a handle formed in the free edge portion of said panel and each said section opposite the abutted edges of the latter,
4. A portfolio coloring kit, comprising: an edge abutted identical pair of rectangular sections lying in a common plane forming a writing surface; a panel of pliable material coextensive with and underlying said sections, said panel being bonded to said sections except along the adjacent edge portion opposite the Writing surface of the abutted edges of said sections permitting said sections to be hinged toward each other and disposed in spaced-apart parallel relation; a pocket secured to the surface of said panel opposite one end portion of one said section, said pocket being open toward the other end portion of said one section; a rectangular box-like container formed by said panel opposite the end portion of the other said section diagonally opposite said pocket, said other section having an opening coinciding with said box-like container; a lid slidably connected to the surface of said other section around the opening; and a handle formed in the free edge of said panel and each said section opposite the abutted edges of the latter.
