PAPER PAIL OR BOX.
Application filed March 25, 1912.
1 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLES T. BLOOMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Baper Pail or Box, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to paper pails or boxes and particularly to the arrangement of the folding flaps and the means for securing them in closed position.
The principal'objects of the invention are to improve and simplify the construction of such pails and fastening means as well as to increase their efficiency in use and to decrease the expense attending their manu facture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction herein described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pail constructed in accordance with the present invention, with its cover flap locked in closed position by means of the bendable tongue; Fig. 2 is a similar view of the box with its flaps and tongue in unfolded position; Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the front upper cover of the box showing the flap in locked position.
Like reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The reference numeral 1 indicates the body of the box which is four sided. In the embodiment of invention herein disclosed, the body 1 is in the form of an ice cream pail but it is to be understood that the improvements of the present invention can be used equally as well on egg or cake boxes or other receptacles. The front wall of the body 1 is provided with an upstanding relatively short stub flap 2 which is foldable inwardly on the fold line 3. Said front wall has attached to its outer face a bendable tongue 4, which projects above the mouth of the body 1. The projecting portion of the tongue Specification of Letters Patent.

and stub flap 2 are of approximately equal length, as clearly seen in the drawing.
The numerals 5 and 6 indicate the usual side flaps of the side walls which are intended to be folded innermost over the mouth of the body. The cover flap 7 of the rear wall is foldable forwardly along the fold line 8 and is provided at the forwarl edge thereof with a supplemental flap 9 which is intended to be folded downwardly on the fold line 10, so as to it against the outer face of the front wall of the body 1 of the box, as shown in Fig. l. The cover fiap 7 is provided, substantially coincident with the fold or base line 10 of the supplemental flap, with an elongated opening 11 which is intended to receive the bendable tongue 1. The opening or aperture 11 extends into both the closure and supplemental flaps 7 and 9, respectively.
Particular importance is attached to the fact that the projecting portion of the tongue at and the stub flap 2 of the front wall are of approximately equal length, whereby when the side flaps 5 and G are folded over the mouth of the body 1, stub iiap 2 may rest against the projecting portion of the tongue i, and the cover or closure flap 7 being swung over the flaps 5 and 6, will come to rest upon the stub flap 2. This will prevent the tongue from being accidentally bent during the folding of the flap 7, and furthermore, the flap 7 will be limited in its do inward movement to bring the flap 7 to rest at such a point, that the free end of the tongue may be readily started through the aperture 11 prior to the folding of the stub flap 2. Thus, the stub flap 2 may be folded over the adjacent edges of the flaps 5 and 6, which will permit the flap 7 to fold over the flaps 5, 6 and 2. The flap 7 being brought to closed position, will swing the stub flap over the flaps 5 and 6, and the supplemental flap 9. may then be folded over the front wall of the body with l the tongue l, as seen in Fig. 3, to hold the cover flap 7 in closed condition.
From the foregoing, the important features incident to the provision of the stub flap 2 and the tongue 4., in connection with the other closure flaps as set forth, .will be obvious.
I claim:
A four sided paper pail, the front wall having a relatively short stub flap, the side Walls having flaps adapted to fold over the mouth of the pail, the stub flap being foldable over the respective edges of the side flaps, the rear Wall having closure flaps to fold over the side and stub flaps, the rear closure flap having a supplemental flap at its free end and an aperture at the basal line of the supplemental flap extending into both the closure and supplemental flaps, and a bendable tongue attached to the outer face of the front wall and projecting above the mouth of the pail, the projecting portion of the tongue and the stub flap being of approximately equal length, whereby when the side flaps are folded over the mouth of the pail, the rear closure flap may be swung upon the stub flap in order that the free end of the tongue may be readily started through the said aperture and so that the stub flap may then be folded over the side 20 flaps to permit the rear closure flap to swing to closed position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES T. BLOOMER.
