GEORGE; 0. LAWTON, on ALGONA, IOWA.
IMP RO VEMENT IN 'cA'rcHEs FOR GATE AND 000 LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,330, dated May 30; 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE G. L'AWTON, of Algona, county of Kossuth and State of Iowa, have invented a new anduseful Improvement in Gate and DoorFasteningsrand I do herel by declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will ena- 1 ble' others skilled in (the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in
which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ordinary door with my improved fastening attached thereto; Fig. 2. is a vertical transverse secw ;tion of the same, showing that portion of the fastening which is at the right hand of the I. line (1 d, drawn vertically through Fig. 1; and
l n Fig. 3 is a plan of the catch taken on the line 1 Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawing.
My invention relates to the construction of a gate and barn-door latch; and my improvement consists in the catch being concaved inward from its ends toward' the center, and beveled upward from the bottom to the top,
and provided with a slot or recess to receive :1 a the latch, a more full and particular description of which will be hereinafter given.
In the accompanying drawing, A is the 1 catch, which is permanently affixed to the innerside of l the post or jamb casing of a gate or door, and is of peculiar shape, being concaved from its ends inward toward the center,
and beveled upward front the bottom to. the
top, and is provided in its center with a slot or recess, a, cut laterally across the upper surface of the same, the object of which is to allow the hook to readily enter the slot by passing upward upon the inclined surface of the catch, and alsoto retain the hook inlposition upon the catch by resting within the slot.
B is the latch, which is provided at one end with a lateral pivot, 11, which fits into a corresponding recess upon the inner side of plate 0, which is firmly secured to the gate or door in a manner which admits of a free and easy movement of the latch. The outerlend of saidlatch is enlarged, forming a hook, D, which is so arranged that when the gate or door is closed the inclination of the hook readily slides up the inclination of the catch, by which means the gate or door is secured firmly in a closed position.
It will be noticed that I can use my fastening for either a right or'lei't hand gate or door without any change of form, as the sides of the catch are equal, thus allowing the latch and hook to pass over and engage the same described.
GEORGE O. LAWTON.
