OLIVER CHRISTIAN, OF J OLIET, ILLINOIS.
LATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 497,863, dated May 23, 1893.
Application filed May 12,1892. Renewed April 12, 1893. Serial No. 470,112. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER CHRISTIAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Joliet, county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Double Door-Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, illustrating theinvention, in which Figure 1 represents the edge of a door, the edges of the supporting blocks and my double latch pivoted thereto and in position as when the door is shut; Fig. 2. a horizontal section of the door and blocks, taken on aline level with the upper edges of the double latches, a plan of the double latches, a horizontal section of the central door post and a portion of the edge of the opposite door; the assemblage of the parts being in position as when the door is closed, and the inner latch is fast on the staple. Fig. 3 shows the double latch in position as when one latch is employed to lift the other from the staple. Figs. 4. and 5 are elevations of the inner ends of the two latches.
The nature, construction, application and operation of my double latch Will be fully comprehended by the following detailed description.
A, represents the edge of the door and B. B. are the two blocks secured to the door by bolts E to support the pivot bolts K. M; by which the two latches C O are pivoted to have an oscillating movement.
At N, the two latches are pivoted together by a bolt passing through slotted holes in them; whereby the latches have a free movement on the bolts K. M. by which the latches are pivoted to the blocks B. B. as clearly shown at Fig. 2. In order that the top portions of the two latches inay be at all times on a line when either one is made fast to a staple L a depending standard I is made a part of the inner end of the latch G and a depending standard .I. is made a part of the inner end of the latch C; and both of said standards are enlarged in width below the shanks of the latches; whereby the enlarged parts serve as stops to keep the top portions of the latches from swinging down out of line.
When the latches are elevated as shown at Fig. 3 to disengage a catch, or staple L the depending standards I. J. come in contact and serve as stops to regulate the lift of the latches; and the shoulder 0 on the standard J prevents the latches from turning down out of line. Each latch is provided with a notch and shoulder V to engage a staple L as shown at Figs. 1 and2; and from the said shoulder outward and upward, are rounded portions to deflect the latches on to the catch. In the section at Fig. 2 P is a horizontal section of the middle jamb posts; and R represents a portion of the opposite door lapping on to the post. WVhen the door A is constructed to lap also onto the post P the latches C, 0', must be let into a gain in the edge of the door, of such a depth as will permit the latch C to pass onto the side of the post P as shown at Fig. 2. The staple L is preferable to a pin; in that it has two supporting prongs. As shown, the staple at Figs. 1 and 2 has an inclined position to permit the latch to engage one prong thereof. It is evident that if the door A be swung back against the side of the barn, or shed, and a staple be secured to said side, the latch G will engage the staple and hold the door open; and that either latch C O can be employed to disengage the other latch from a staple.
It has been the custom to employ double shutter fasteners, as shown in Patent No. 473,648. I therefore disclaim double latches which lie in the same plane, are not pivoted together, do not overlap and are not provided with depending standards or prongs at their respective inner ends to regulate the throw which the latches are to have when open and shut.
That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A door fastener consisting of the two latches G and G, which are fastened separately to blocks and the blocks secured to the flat sides of the door, and the latches overlapping each other at their inner portions and loosely pivoted together and their inner ends respectively provided with depending standards which regulate the throw of latches as and for the purpose specified.
OLIVER CHRISTIAN.
