Description
L L. MERED-ITH.A
`Improvement in Gates. 4
N0, H4,I77 Patented April25,871.
dimitir 55mm JOB LEWIS MEREDITH, OF BLOOMINGSBURG, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 114,177, dated April 2,5, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN -GATES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom. it may conce/riz:
Be it known that I, -J 0B LEWIS, MEREDITH, of Bloomingsburg, in the county of Fulton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the saine,l reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a side elevation of my improved gate.
Figure 2 is av top view ot' the same.
This invention has for its object the general improved construction of that class of farinrates which are so adjusted that they may beraised to obviate snow obstructions, or to give an opening underneath for the passage of small stoclg.
In the accompanying drawing- A represents the gate, composed of horizontal bars and vert-ical l battens.
B is the front, and
C the rear-end posts, inserted in the ground.
'lo the former the gate, when closed, is latched or locked by the latch b and pin b.
The gate is hinged by a single loop-hinge, a, or other suitable device, connecting the lower portion of the gate with a post, D', arranged to slide up and down between the guides el d', of which one is inclined over 'the beveled side of said. post to prevent lateral movement thereof', and the slotted cap d.
On the hack part ofthe post D a rack, df, is formed, and a pawl, E, pivoted to' the post O, so that the stud e may be thrust between the teeth of said rack in order to sustain the post D when the same, with gate hinged thereto, is elevated.
A recess, e', is cut in the post D, between -it and the post C, at a point somewhere along the rack, in which a pin, e, slides, by means of which the pawl is disenu gaged from the rack.
The top of the post D is narrowed and rounded, and a mortised cap, F, loosely {itt-ed thereon.
Tothe forward' end of said cap a bar, G, is seeured.
This har reaches thence diagonally to the forward end of the gate, and is there pivoted to a lever, G', which is also pivoted to bottom horizontal bar of the ate. g H represents a loop or box attached to the top bar ofthe gate, and through which the bar Gr passes, and by which the same is held in position.
By pressing the lever G' forward the front end 0f the gate only is raised, and underneath the front end small stock may pass.
Vhen the front end of the gate has been thus elevated, the pin b may be inserted in 4an upper hole, I. The latch rests then on the pin and holds the gate up.
When the post D is raised, by raising the front end of the gate a little more than ordinarily, thevpin c" will be pressed by the back of the gate against the pawl and the post allowed to fall.
Having described m'y invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the lever G', bar G, cap F, hinge a, post D, gate A, and post B O, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The pin c, in combination with the post D, pawl E, and gate A, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence f two witnesses.
JOB 'LEWIS MEREDITH.
Witnesses PETER C. DUMBAULD, ORANGE MEREDITH.
