IMPROVEMENT IN SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS FOR THE RELIEF OF THEPILES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,285, dated May 30, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD DITHRIDGE,
A of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improved Surgical Instrumentfor (JuringPiles; andI do hereby declare the fol- 1 lowing to be a full, clear and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specifi- A cation which" is a representation in perspective in twofigures(Figures 1 and2) of my improved instrument looking at it from each end.
My invention is designed to furnish a safe,
convenient, and effectual mode of retaining and, preventing the protrusionof the piles, and
also of applying any salve or ointment which i it may bedesired to apply as a curative; and
A the nature of my invention consists in theconstructidn of a plug having a contracted neck between the end of the tapering portion and the base. This Ieffect by the use of a plug formed preferably of glass, but which may also be madeof any suitable-metal or other material. A j l This plug consists of an elongated and slight- A i ,l y taperingportion, a, beneath or back of which is a bed or .eollar,b. Under or back of the collar b the diameter is contracted so as to form a neck, 0, between the collar and the enlarged base (1, which latter is preferablyiof oblong form, as shown. :When in use the ointment or salve is placed on the pluga, between the collar b and the opposite end of the plug a, and that portion of the plug may be grooved longitudinally or eircumferentiall y, or furnished with recesses, the better to'receive and retain the salve. A plaster, e, or piece of linen, having a central hole, through which the plug is inserted, is coated with salve, and is placed around the neck 0, fitting as closely to it as possible, which serves to keep the salve or A ointment of the plug a to its place.
When used the plug furnished with the salve or ointment, and if necessary also with the plaster/e, as described, is inserted in the rectum until the anus closes around the neck 0, between the collar 12 and the base (1. The effeet is not only to keep the parts afi'ectedsuppliedwith the salve or ointment, but also to keep the piles from coming down, and the result is found to be very effectualinciirin-g this painful disease.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The neck 0, arranged between the base end of the corrugated portion a and the base 01, substantially as described?" In testimony whereof I, the said EDWARD DITHRIDGE, have-hereunto set my hand.
. EDWD. DITHRIDGE.
