Description

l futuitrd gisten strut Gettin.
Letters Patent No. 96,095, dated ctober 26, 1869.
To al1 whom it may concern:
y i Beit known that I, JAMES J. Essex, of Newport,
in the county of Newport, and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and improved Enema and UterineSynnge; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exaotdescription thereof, which will enable others slilled in the art to make and use "tes'aine, refierence'leng` had in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement on thesynnge patented July 28, 1863, to C. A. Jozansi, No. 39,348, and
is designed to obviate a serious diiiculty incident to the operation of his device, as hereinafter explained. In the drawings is' represented a. side view of my invention in use.
' Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding A represents a valve-box, to one cud of which an eduction-tube, B, is secured, an elastic bulb, O, being connected to the opposite end, and an elastic suctionpipeD, connected to the side of ity as shown.
- lThe bulb 0 is not connected directly to the-valvel box, the former being provided with au elastic extension-tube, E.: n The elastic tube E will admit of the eduction-tube B being inserted in the rectum or womb with facility,
: and, at 'the same time, admit of the elasticbulb 0 being operated bythe hand with the greatest possible convenience, aswill be clearly understood by referring to the drawing.
`'lhe ordinary syringes are attended. with a great the suction-tube must extend downward 'into the vesy sel containing the water or other fluid to be injected into the rectum or womb, and this position ofthe suction-tube,'together with the position of the rectum or womb, renders it impossible to have the bulb without l an elastic neck, brought into a convenient position to be operated.
The tube B is formedwith anexternal bulb, a", a shortdistauce from its end, in older to limit the extent of the penetration of the tube into the mouth of the womb, and also toprevent Ithe escape of the injection nliquid therefro f I have found that a rigid curved tube, such as that shown in J ozansis case, will not properly perform the function required, since the action of` the 'bulb will move the discharge-pipe.
In my invention, the bulb has entirely independent motion, so that when'the syringe is applied to an inamed vagina, or other passage, the dischargepipe will remain at rest, thus avoiding causing pain to the patient. The ilexible tube also allows the operator to hold it or the bulb in any desired position, wholly irrespective of the discharge-tube, thus rendering the assistance of a second person unnecessary, in case the patient has'the requisite strength and knowledge for properly applying the instrument.
In View of the above, I desire to claim nothing shown in the patent referred to.
Having thus described-my invention, I I
'What I claim as new, and desire to-secure by Let ters Patent, is
An improved syringe, asspecilied, consisting of the bulb C, elasticv neck E, body'A,l and vrigid .dischargetube B, each of said parts being constructed as hereinbefore described. Y I
" vJAMES J. ESSEX.
