MAN ICURE INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 18, 1910.
Application filed March 28, 1910. Serial No. 552,036.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERNST RUETTGERS, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Manicure Instruments, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to manicure devices, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction, elfective in operation and comparatively inexpensive; and with this and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, comprising a nail file provided at one end with longitudinal arms between which is mounted a telescopic cuticle blade, said blade and said arms being provided with means where by the blade may be locked against outward movement when fully projected.
The invention is fully disclosed in'the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a side View of my improved manicure instrument and showing the cuticleblade in a telescoped position; Fig. 2 an edge view thereof; Fig. 3 a view similar to Fig. l and showing the cuticle blade projected, and with part of the construction in section ;-Fig. 4 a partial view of the file and showing the spring arms connected therewith, the cuticle blade being detached; Fig. 5 an enlarged section on the line 55 of Fig. 3, and ;-Fig. 6 a side view of a jaw member, two of which are employed.
In the practice of my invention I provide a manicure instrument, comprising a nail file a, one end of which is preferably tapered or pointed as shown at a in the usual manner, and the other end of which is provided with an extension a slotted longitudinally as shown at a to form spring arms a the outer edges of which are preferably concaved as shown at a to add to the resiliency thereof, and mounted between the spring arms a is a slide Z) with which is connected a cuticle blade 0, said slide and said blade being preferably formed integrally.
The slide 1) is provided in its opposite side edges with grooves b in which the inner edges of the spring arms a fit, and one edge of the cuticle blade 0 is concaved as shown at c and the inner edge of the corresponding spring arm a is provided with an inwardl directed lug or projection (Z adapted to fit in a notch or recess (Z in the bottom of the corresponding groove in the slide 6.
Secured to the ends of the spring arms a are jaws c, which are preferably curved as shown, one of said jaws being shown detached in Fig. 6, and one of these jaws is secured to one of the spring arms a in the form of construction shown, and the other is secured to the other of said arms, this connection being shown at 6 and the free end of said jaws are provided with recesses 6 and the ends of the spring arms a are provided with headed pins 6 movable in said recesses.
The cuticle blade 0 is provided with an operating end 0 the back edge of which is beveled or rounded as shown at 0 and the front edge of which is straight as shown at c and sharpened so as to enable said blade to be used for the purpose for which it is intended.
It will be observed that when the cuticle blade 0 is detached the spring arms a converge slightly as shown in Fig. 4E, and when said cuticle blade is in position as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, it is held in its telescoped innermost position by the spring action of said arms but is locked against outward movement when in its projected position by the lug or projection 03, which enters the recess (Z in the slide Z2, and in the movement of the slide 6 and blade 0 from their innermost position as shown in Fig. 1 to their outermost position as shown in Fig. 3, the spring arms a move outwardly and in the operation of telescoping the said slide and blade, said spring arms move inwardly, this operation of said arms being permitted by reason of the method of connecting the jaws c therewith as shown and as hereinbefore described. The file a forms a handle member by which the device is manipulated when the blade 0 is being used and the slotted end portion a of the file in which the blade 0 is mounted serves as a handle for the file when the latter is being used.
My improved manicure instrument is simple in construction and operation and comparatively inexpensive, and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A manicure instrument, comprising a nail file, one end of which is provided with an extension which is slotted longitudinally to form spring arms, a slide mounted betweensaid arms and provided with a cuticle blade, said blade and said arms being provided with means for locking said slide at the limit of its outward movement and said arms being provided at their outer ends with transverse jaws between which said blade is movable.
2. A manicure instrument, comprising a nail file, one end of which is provided with an extension which is slotted longitudinally to form parallel arms a slide mounted between said arms and provided with a cuticle blade, said blade and, said arms being provided with means for locking said slide at the limit of its outward movement, and said arms being provided at their outer ends with transverse jaws between which said blade is movable.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 25th day of March 1910.
ERNST RUETTGERS.
