Description
ATENT Fries.
S. TIBBALS, OF DTOH FLAT, CALIFORNIA.
IANIPROVEMENTIN -DEVICIES FOR CURLING HAIR.y
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 105,519, dated July 19, 1870.
' To LZZ whom it concern:
Be it known that I, Sl LEE TIBBALs, of Dutch Flat, county of Placer, State of California, have invented an Improved Device for Curl ing the Hair; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawing are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly y appertains to make and use my said invention or improvements Without further invention or experiment. y v
My invention relates to an improved device to be used for curling the human 01 artificial hair, rendering the process at once easy and convenient, -and. doing away with the usual curl-papers 0r leads, aswell as the heated iron, with which many persons do great injury to the hair. i
In order to j explain my invention so that others can'make anduse my device, reference ishad to the accompanying drawing, forming apart of this specification, in which- A represents a piece of plate or sheet metal, which, when it is eut or stamped out in the hat piece, is much Widest at one end, tapering gradually towardthe opposite end. The two opposite tapering sides of the plate A are then bent in opposite directions, so as to form an Sshaped curve, this bent plate also tapering ,from one end to the other. f
To curl the hair it is Jnrst Wet or damped in a solution or preparation which I have devised, and which is subject-matter for another patent. The hair vis then Wrapped spirally around theabove-described tapering instrument A, and a pin, a, ixed upon the hair, so as to clasp it iirmly, by inserting one of the arms of the pin under the hair through the groove or recess `b in the iron, and locking it upon the hair in this position.
. The pin a consists of a piece 0f wire, which is bent upon itself so as to have aslight spring. One of the ends of this wire is bent or hooked so that it can be made to clasp the other, and thus hold the hair between ythe two prongs of the pin. The two ends of the wire may be crossed near the doubling-point. and thus give a firmer clasp. One of these pins is made to clasp the curl the entire length on each side ofthe iron, being inserted, as above described, under the hair through the recesses b and b', after whichthe iron canbe withdrawn, leavi ing the pins to hold the curl in the proper position until it is desired to remove them.
The iron A may be formedin various ways, so as to provide a recess' through which to in- .sert the pins, and various styles and arrangements of the pins could be used to serve the same purpose; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hairjcurling iron, when provided with grooves or recesses b b', substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with the above-claimed curling-iron, of the locking hairpin a, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I havefhereunto set my hand and seal. l
