NICHOLAS STOCK, OF KINGSTON, NEW YORK.
FURNITURE-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 31, iltlllii.
Application filed January 18, 1915. Serial No. 2,905.
T all iii/10m it may concern Be it known that I, NICHOLAS S'rock, a citizen of the United States, and residing in Kingston, in Ulster county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ifurniture-Pads, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in furniture pads, and is an improvement on my invention for furniture pads covered in II. S. Patent No. 771,679 of Oct. 4th, 1904.
An. object of the present invention is to provide such a device, simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and superior in wearing qualities to those heretofore in use.
A further object is to provide such a device wherein a hide leather outer shell and an inner leather core are combined with a solid base made from a single piece of metal, so that a most substantial pad is obtained which cannot become loosened from constant use and which will glide over polished floors, carpets, marble, etc., with the least amount of friction.
A further object is to provide a pad which will not be noticeable and will not add materially to the height of the chair.
lVith these and other objects in View, my invention consists of the novel features, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the legs of an-article of furniture showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective viewof the furniture pad; Fig. 3 is a sectional view, before clenching of cap; Fig. 4 is a sectional view, with a cap clenched; and, Fig. 5 is a bottom plan View thereof.
Similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, the invention comprises a metal cap or top 1, to which is soldered or otherwise securely fastened a shank or screw 2. The screw 2 is situated centrally of the cap 1 and does not pass through to the other parts of the pad hereinafter described. An upper layer of leather 3 snugly fits against the under side of the cap 1, and to the said layer of leather is secured a core or button 4.
An outer shell 5 formed of hide is secured to the button 4, and to the rim of the upper layerg3 by cement or the like 6, and is circumferentially flared outwardly to form a peripheral flange 7 at the edge thereof. The rim of the cap 1 is upset as at 8, so that the edges contact with the flange 7 and securely clench the outer leather shell and the upper layer of leather in position over the button 4.
By using hide for the outer shell, a pad is provided which will not harden or lose its shape as in the ordinary pads heretofore in use, and the clenching of the cap to the leather shell portion over the button or core will do away with any danger of the parts becoming loose and falling apart.
lVhen the outer shell is worn through, the core will still serve as an eflective pad, the upper layer 3 serving to hold the same in position.
I have illustrated preferred and satisfactory forms of my invention, but it is obvious that changes may be made therein, without departing from the spirit and scope thereof, except as may be required by the claim.
I claim A furniture pad, comprising an inner core of leather, an outer shell of hide leather cemented thereto and provided with a flexible peripheral flange, an upper layer of leather cemented to the upper side of said core and extending over and cemented to the said flexible peripheral flange to form a flexible flange of two thicknesses of material, a cap of a single piece of material having its rim clenched over the said flexible flange, inclosing the same and doubling it downwardly upon itself, the said clenched rim being turned inwardly and engaging the surface of the said outer shell, thereby forming the said flange into a beaded interlocking structure, and a shank secured to said cap.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NICHOLAS STUCK.
