Application September 8, 1958, Serial No. 759,478
2 Claims. (Cl. 2118'6) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a utility device, such as a rack for holding objects in a convenient location.
The principal object of the invention is directed to the provision of a utility device or rack, for holding magazines, newspapers, cigarettes, matches, an ash tray, and the like, and embodies means for securing the device to a toilet bowl.
The novel device of the invention is constructed for holding reading matter of various kinds, such as newspapers and magazines, and cigarettes, matches, an ash tray and the like, and is arranged and designed so as to be secured to either side of a toilet bowl for convenience.
The device is formed in such a manner as to be economically manufactured, is efficient for the use intended, and is easily and readily secured to a toilet bowl in the position desired.
Various changes and modifications may be made in the device, within the spirit and scope of the invention, and will be described in the form presently preferred, and shown in the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figs. 1 and 2 are side and front end elevational views respectively of a device embodying the novel features of the invention;
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the device shown in Figs. 1 and 2; and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, the invention will be fully described.
A rack or holder 2 is provided and is formed from U- shaped members 3 having upwardly extending side portions 4 which are connected at lower ends to transverse members 6.
Elongated bottom members 8 extend along the members 6, and an upper member 10 connects the upper ends of the side members 4, in such a manner that the rack is open at its upper side.
The members described will preferably be formed from Somewhat stiff wire and will be secured together in the relation shown in some suitable manner as by brazing, welding or the like so as to provide a strong and rugged rack structure.
Supporting devices 12 include upper members 14 which are secured to the bottom members 8 at any desired point therealong. Lower members 16 are adjustable up and down on the members 14 and are held in positions of adjustment by screws 18. Cushion like feet 20 are carried by the members 16 for resting on the floor.
Means for securing the rack structure to the upper rim at either side of a toilet bowl is provided. With the rack so secured, the supporting devices 20 rest on the floor.
Patented Sept. 8, 1959 at one side thereof and extendslaterally outwardly there from. A bar 26 is adjustable in and out relative to the bar 24. Said bar 26 is provided with slots 28, and a bolt 30 extends through a selected slot 28 of the bar 26 as well as through a suitable aperture in the bar 24 as shown in Fig. 4, to hold the bars in adjusted positions.
A plate 32, fixed to the outer end of the bar 26, has hooks 34 in threaded engagement therewith, which are adapted to overlie the upper rim part of a toilet bowl and to engage the inner side thereof.
Clamp screws 36, in threaded engagement with the plate 32, are provided whereby said hooks and screws are adapted to clamp or secure the rack to the rim of a toilet bowl in an upright position and with the pads 20 resting on the floor.
Opposite end portions of the upper member 10 at one side of the rack extend outwardly from the ends of the rack and are provided with eyes 42, as in Fig. 3. A shelf like holder 39 is secured to one of said eyes by a bolt 44. A receptacle 46 for a cigarette package, and a receptacle 44' for matches are secured to said one member 10 adjacent the holder 39 by any suitable means as soldering, brazing or the like.
The holder 39 may be of any desired shape for supporting an ash tray of glass or made of plastic as may be desired.
It will be observed that the device is adapted to be secured to either side of a toilet bowl so as to be convenient for use, and may be easily and readily positioned as desired.
The rack is held in an upright position for the insertion and Withdrawal of magazines or the like, and is convenient for its intended use.
Various changes may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention, and it is preferred to be limited, if at all, by the appended claims, rather than by the foregoing disclosure.
I claim:
1. A utility rack for securing to the upper rim portion of either side of a toilet bowl, said rack including longitudinally spaced U-shaped members having transversely spaced vertically extending side portions connected at lower ends by transverse portions, an upper member extending around and connected to upper ends of said side portions, adjustable supporting devices secured to lower portions of said rack adjacent opposite ends thereof for supporting the rack from the floor, an ash tray support carried by said upper member at one end of said rack, and securing means for securing the upper portion of the rack to the upper rim portion at a side of a toilet bowl, said securing means including an elongated bar member fixed to and extending outwardly from said upper member, a bar member adjustable in and out on said firstnamed bar member, and clamp means carried by said second-named bar member for engaging inner and outer sides of the upper rim portion of a toilet bowl.
2. A device for ash tray, cigarettes, matches, magazines and the like adapted to be secured to the upper rim either side of a toilet bowl comprising, a rack structure having longitudinally spaced U shaped members provided with transversely spaced vertically extending opposite side portions connected at lower ends by transverse portions, an upper member extending around and connected to upper ends of said vertically extending side portions, adjustable supporting means for adjusting the height of the device secured to lower portions of said rack adjacent opposite ends thereof for supporting the rack from the floor, an ash tray support carried by said upper member at one end of said rack, and securing means for securing the upper member of the rack to the upper rim portion at either side of a toilet bowl, and receptacles for cigarettes 5 and matches secured to said rack, said securing means including a member secured to and extending outwardly from said upper member and a member adjustable therealong having means to engage inner and outer sides of the 1 upper rim of a toilet bowl.
