Description

June 29, 1948. c. s. RENTOS CIGARETTE PACKAGE CONTAINER AND SUPPORT Filed Feb. 19, 1947 gwuc/wtom ("05746 G. PEA T05 Patented June 29, 1943 OFFICE CIGARETTE PACKAGEYCIONTAINERAND SUPPORT Costas George Rentos, Brooklyn, N. Y. Application February 19, 1947, Serial No. 729,440
2 Claims; (Cl. 248-196) This invention relates to cigarette package the production of a simple and eflicient container for supporting a cigarette package in an upright position upon a table, desk and the like, in a manner whereby the cigarettes may be easily extracted from the package.
A further object of this invention is the production of a simple and efiicient spring support for the package container for bracing the package container in an upright position.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claims.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a perspective View of the cigarette package support and container;
Figure 2 is a rear elevational view thereof with the top or cover in a closed position;
Figure 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the container, with the top in an open position;
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional View taken on line l-d of Figure I, with the cigarette package removed.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that Ill designates the container which is preferably provided with a hinged top H. The com tainer i is provided with an inclined bottom I? to rest upon a support while the container is supported in an inclined position, as shown in Figures 1 and 3. The container I0 is provided with a rear wall IS in which is formed a vertical or longitudinally extending, centrally located, slot M. A pair of vertically extending longitudinally extending ribs l 5 are pressed outwardly from the rear wall IS in parallel relation to define a channel l6 therebetween.
A brace H, which is formed of spring metal is secured at its upper end to the container ID within the channel l6 near the upper end of the container l0 and fits snugly between the ribs l5, to hold the brace l7 against lateral twisting movement. The upper end of the brace maybe soldered, welded or secured to the container in any suitable manner common to the trade. The brace I1 is provided with a lower free end l8 and is provided with a longitudinal slot l9, which registers with the slot l4 formed in the container iii. A slide or button 20 extends through the slots l4 and I9 and this slide or button 20 overhangs the under or inner face of the edges of the slot l4 in the container and also overhangs the outer face of the slot l9 in the spring metal brace 11. As the slide or button 20 is moved downwardly to the position shown in Figure 2, the brace 18 will container and support, and has for one of its objects be held fiat within the channel IS in the manner shown in Figure 4. When, however, it is desired to stand the container 29 upon a support, the button or slide 20 is moved upwardly of the slots M and 19 to the position shown in Figures 1 and 3 to the point where the brace I1 is secured to the container, and the lower free end l8 will automatically spring outwardly of the lower end of the channel I 6 to a substantially vertical position. The brace I! will then support the container 'ID in an inclined position when the bottom l2 rests upon a support and the lower extremity of the brace ll also rests upon a support as shown in detail in Figure 3.
It should be noted that as the button 2|] is moved vertically of the container, the brace will automatically spring outwardly to a bracing position away from the container to constitute a support for the container. When the button 20 is moved downwardly, the spring brace I! will be drawn to a position to lie flat against the container l0 within the channel l6 between the ribs l5. The side edges of the spring brace I! will thereby be shielded and snugly encased between the ribs ll. The brace will then lie flush with the outer faces of said ribs.
When the cover or top H is open and the container is placed in the position shown in Figures 1 and 3, the cigarettes within the package 2|, placed in the container, may be easily reached through the open top of the container. When the cover or top H is closed, the package 2| will be enclosed and protected within the container l0, and when the brace is moved to an inoperative position within the channel l6 by moving the button 20 downwardly, the container will accommodate itself in a pocket or other place of storage, without danger to the contents as well as surrounding objects or articles.
Having described the invention, what I claim is:
l. A device of the class described comprising a container, a brace carried by and secured to the container near the upper end thereof, the lower end of the brace being free, said brace being formed of spring metal, said container having a longitudinally extending slot formed in one wall thereof and located under the brace, said brace having a longitudinally extending slot formed therein and registering with the slot formed in the container, a slide extending through said slots, said slide overhanging the under face of the edges of the slot in the container and the outer face of the slot in the brace for moving said brace to a position to lie flat against said container when the slide is moved in one direction and permitting the brace to spring outwardly away from the container when the slide is moved in the opposite direction to constitute a support for holding the container inan upright position.
2. A device of the class described comprising a container, a brace carried by and secured to the container near the upper end thereof, the lower end of the brace being free, said brace beingformed of spring metal. said container having a longitudinally extending slot formed in one wall thereof and located under the brace, said brace} having a longitudinally extending slot formed therein and registering with the slot formed in the container, a slide extending through said slots, said slide overhanging the under face of the edges of the slot in the container and the outer face of the slot in the brace for moving said brace to a position to lie fiat against said container when the slide is moved in one direction and permitting the brace to spring outwardly therein when said slide is moved to a selected position to move the brace to an inoperative position.
