UNITED STATES,
PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES AUSTIN, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
DARNlNG-LAST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 389,683, dated September 18, 1888. Application filed March 23, 1888. Serial No. 268,202. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES AUSTIN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Darning-Support, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved darning-support, for use in darningstockings, and has for its object to provide a device capable of a dual use-as a support, as above set forth, and a receptacle for the utensils employed in the work.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fullyset forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device, illustrating the sections as disconnected; and Fig. 2 is apartial elevation and section.
In carrying out the invention, Arepresents a shell, preferably of egg shape, divided into two interlocking sections, a and a. The section a, corresponding to the butt of an egg, is filled with emery, sawdust, meal, or similar material, and the said material is concealed by a piece of suitable "fabric cemented or otherwise secured to the inner walls of the section.
The combined section, .fabric, and aforesaid material constitute a needle-cushion, D, the exposed surface whereof is preferably cylindrical.
From the center of the cushion D a post, E, is projected, representing a frustum of a cone, which post is or may be covered with a fabricsuch as velvet-and is adapted by reason of its shape to support a thimble, e. The section a, corresponding to thepointofan egg,is provided upon the inner side with a cushion like drapery, H, whereby, when the two sections are united, the drapery H will retain the thimble, and also any needles that may be in the cushion, in position when the device is not in use.
It is purposed to construct the shell of metal, but other material-such as rubber, ivory, or a suitable compositionmay be employed.
Having thus described myinvention, what I U claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, a darning-support consisting of a metallic eggshaped shell, A, formedin two interlocking sections, a a, the section a being filled with suitable material and covered with fabric, forming a needle-cushion having a cylindrical uppersurface,andhavingathimble-support,E, projecting from the center of the said cushion, and the other section, a, provided with an interior cushion-like drapery, H, as set forth.
CHARLES AUSTIN.
