R. S. MAINS.
Dice-Boxes.
N0 148 374 PatentedMarch10.1874.
WITHESSES: INV NTUB: y
" NITEE STATES RANDOLPH S. MAINS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN DICE-BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,374, dated March 10, 1874; application filed January 5, 1874.
To all lwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RANDOLPH S. MAINS, of
the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Convertible Dice-Boxes, of which the following is a specication:
This invention relates to the construction of glass dice-boxes in which the dice are coniined but always visible, so constructed that the glass cover may be readily removed for the purpose of changing the dice or converting the box to other purposes; and it consists of a case having a glass cover and a removable base, which are readily disconnected and a glass bottom or bed, the construction being as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an elevation of the case in perspective. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a glass cover, having a flan ge, B, around the base, to which is attached a loose metallic band, C. This band is provided with a screwthread on its inside, as seenl in the drawing. D represents the base, which may be made of wood, ivory, vulcanized rubber, or other suitable material. Around the upper end of this base is a metallic flanged band, E, on the outside of which isa screw-thread to engage with the female thread of the band C. The upper ange F of this band turns over at a right angle and secures the glass floor-piece G. The base of the glass cover A rests upon this iange F. The glass piece G rests upon the top of the base'D, and forms a smooth and hard surface for the dice.
By making the base removable, one or allthe pieces of dice may be removed, and the dice-box may be converted into a case for containing` small wax-flowers or other parlor ornament.
This dice-box must necessarily be small and light to render' it available; but by reason of its removable base it is readily converted to other uses.
In playing the popular game of backgammon, but two pieces of dice are used. After throwing with three pieces (as in ordinary dice playing) a single piece is readily removed. The cover is cleaned at all times with great facility.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination of the glass cover A, having flange B, the internally-threaded band O, having an inwardly-projecting top flange, the externally-threaded inner band E, having a top flange, F, and the floor-piece G, with the stand D, annularly recessed around its upper edge, as and for the purpose described.
2. A dice-box provided with the glass floorpiece Gr, and having a removable base, substantially as described.
l n. s. MAINS.
