lMPROVEMENT m H oss.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 115,132, dated May 23, 1871,
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN STILWELL, of Griffin, in the county of Spaulding and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description. thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanyv in g drawing forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hoes; and it consistsin a hovel mode of connecting theblade to the ferrule for detaching it for reversing or applying different blades for different kinds of work,
Figure l is a front elevation of a hoe constructed according to my iinprovements, and Fig. 2 is a section of the same taken on the sponding parts.
A is a strong pendant from the lower side of the lower end of the ferrule B, having a large countersunk hole, 0, and a dowel-pin, D. E is the hoe-blade,havin g a hole for the dowelpin D; also, a hole coinciding with the hole 0, and a slot, F, extending from it to the upper end, which has a slight concave notch for fitting to the ferrule. G is a clamping-plate with a concave notch at the top. fitting snugly up against the under side of the ferrule B, also having a bolt, H, fitted in it to pass through the plate E at the bottom of slot F, and through the hole 0 to receive the clamp-nut I, which is secured on it and into the countersink of hole 0 so as not to project enough to be injured or be objectionable in any way.
By this simple contrivance the blades may be readily attached and removed for any purpose without wholly removing the nut from the bolt.
Having thus described my invention, l'clai m as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patcut- The pendant A of the ferrule B having the countersunk hole 0 and the dowel-pin; also,
the plate G, bolt H, and nut I, combined with the blade and the ferrule B, the said blade having holes for the dowel-pin and bolt, all substantially as specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 16th day of March, 1871-. 'JOHN STILLWELL.
