' INVENTUB WITNESSES YHE GRAPHIC CQPHOYO-LI'TILZBII4I PARK PLACE, [1)].
UNITED STATES WILLIAM MOORE FAUNT LE ROY,
OF FREDERIGKSBURG, VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 156.931, dated November 17,1874; application filed April 18, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. FAUNT LE ROY, of Fredericksburg, in the county of Spottsylvania and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjustable Hoes, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in the construction of hoes, adjustable and convertible into shovels; and consists in the manner of attaching the handle and making it adjustable with regard to the blade to suit the various purposes for which hoes of various kinds, as well as shovels, are used.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view. Fig. 2 is a top view, and Fig. 3 shows the handle adjusted to the blade so as toform a shovel.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is the blade, which is formed with a forked shank or eye, B, composed of the two arms 0 D, of any desired length, extending from the top of the blade at an angle of fifteen degrees, more or less, with the back E of the blade. F is the handle made of any convenient size and length, with a metallic plate, G,
upon each side of the end, and with a vertical slot, H, through it, as seen. The handle is received between the two arms 0 D, and is confined by a bolt or rivet, I, which allows it to turn and stand at any desired angle with This jointed connection is made the blade.
in about the middle of the forked shank. The arms 0 D extend back and receive the end of the radius-bar J, which is confined to the arms by means of the thumb-screw K. The other end of this bar is confined to the handle by the thumb-screw L, which passes through the slotH in the handle. By loosening this thumbscreWL, so as to allow the bolt to slip forward or back in the slot, the bolt'or rivet I becomes a fulcrum, and the blade and shank a lever. M is a hole through the handle, placed at the same distance from the fulcrum I as the thumbscrew K, so that by removing the radius-bar the thumb-screw K may be put through the hole M, to form a shovel, as seen in Fig. 3.
It will be seen that by this construction, the blade may be adjusted to any desired angle or position to fit it for any of the purposes for which hoes, as well as shovels, are used. The advantages of this arrangement are many, and must be obvious to all.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with the pivoted hoe-blade A, of the vertically-slotted handle F, adjustable and detachable brace or radius-bar J, and the thumb-screw L, all constructed and arranged as herein shown and described, for the object stated.
WILLIAM MOORE FAUN T LE ROY.
