UNITED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
JAMES E. SISSON, OF BASTROP, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,535, dated Drcember I6, 1873; applicaion filed October 3, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. Srsson, of Bastrop, in the parish of Morehouse and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cultivator, of which the fol lowing is a specification Figure'l is a side elevation of my improved cultivator, partly in section, through the line as as, Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improved wheel-cultivator, simple in construction convenient. in use, and effective in operation; doing its work well, without injuring the plants, even when they may be tall; and it consists in the construction and combination of various part-s of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.
A are the wheels, which revolve upon the journals of the axle B. This axle is bent up or raised in the center, the sides of which form guides for the bar 0. Through this bar, and also through the center of axle B, passes a pin, D. This pin passes through the front end of frame E, and has a thread out nearly its entire length, and is provided with a handle and nut, F F, by'turning which the front end of the frame E maybe raised or lowered. To the outside of frame E are attached the upper ends of the standards G. Said standards are provided with slots H, through which passes a bolt for clamping the same firmly to the frame E, as shown in Fig. 1. G are similar standards, attached in a similar manner to the inside of the frame E. I and J are rods for holding thesame in any desired position. To the lower end of the standards G the plow-plates K are attached. L are subsoil attachments, running ahead of the plow-plates, loosening the soil preparatory to. its being thrown to the plants. M are the handles, which may be attached to the frame E in any of the well-known ways. The tongue M is attached to the middle of the cross-bar O, and the cross-bar is braced and secured to axle B by braces P.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with the bent axle B and frame E, the forked slide G, screw-bolt D, lever and nut F, adjustable standards and shovels G K, and subsoilers L, as and for the purpose described.
JAMES E. SISSON.
