Description

JOH N S. CARROLL.
Improvement in Hoes.
Patented April 9,1872.
fan V 7 v gttnrueg UNITED STATES PATENT JOHN S. CARROLL, OF GOVINGTON, GEORGIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND V J. W. ROGERS, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HO ES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,438, dated April 9, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Hoes, invented by JOHN S. CARROLL, of Oovington, in the county of Newton and State of Georgia.
The object of this invention is to furnish a hoe for the cultivation of cotton, and for other purposes, which shall be strong and durable, and better adapted to the purpose than hoes of ordinary construction; and it consists in the construction of the blade, and in adetachable shank and parts connected therewith, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a vertical section ofa hoe constructed according to my invention, showing the shank and handle and the mode of attaching them together. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the shank detached. Fig. 3 is a face View of the blade detached from the shank. Fig. 4 is a "iew of the sliding band by which the shank and blade are fastened to the handle. Fig. 5 'is a curved plate beneath the handle, hereinafter referred to. Fig. 6 is a face view of an ordinary hoe-blade constructed so as to be fastened to the handle by my method. Fig. 7 is a cross-section of my improved hoe-blade taken on the line a: as, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the blade, the form of which is seen in Fig. 3, and in the cross-sections thereof, having four cutting-edges, marked B B and C O, with a point, D, between the two latter, which is the termination of the angular projection E. This projection extends to the top of the blade, with a square orifice, F, and a slot, G, therein,
as seen in the drawing. H is the shank which is fitted into the handle, as seen in Fig. 1, having a fastening-blade, I, on its outer end, with a fastening-lug, J, on the inside of the blade. This fastening-blade l tits into the back of the main blade A, as seen in Fig. l. K is the circular plate, see Fig. 5,) which is fitted into the under side of the handle with its endresting on the angular surface of the lug J, which serves to hold the fastening-blade down to the main blade and greatly strengthen the connection. L is the band which slides on the handle over the shank H and circular plate K. as seen in Fig. 1. This band is fastened by the key N, which holds the parts rigidly together. In attaching the parts together the fastening-lugJ passes through the orifice F, and the shank Ll ii ts into the slot G. B y knockin g out the key N, the parts are readily separated, and a blade of any other form prepared therefor (like the one shown in Fig. 6, for instance) may be substituted for the blade A.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The blade A, constructed substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The. blade I, hooked shank H, lug J, and band L, in combination ith the handleI and a hoe-blade provided with slots F G, as shown 7 and. described. 1
