IMPROVEMENT IN WEEDlNG-HOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,229, dated August 31, 1875 application filed April 19, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON SOMIERS DUN- HAM, of Verona, Oneida county, New York, have invented an Improvement in lVeeding- Hoes, of which the following is a specification:
My improvement consists in the form and construction of a hoe, and the attachment of the handle thereto, to facilitate the weeding and cultivating of crops.
The construction is as follows, referring to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the hoe. Fig. 2 is a plan of the upper face of the blade next the handle.
I form the blade a of the hoe of astraight flat plate of steel, somewhat thicker than an ordinary hoe-blade, and of an oblong form. (Shown in Fig. 2.) One end of this blade is formed at right angles to the lower or cutting edge a, or so formed as to out without deviating the front edge. The other end is formed at an acute angle to said cutting-edge a, as seen in Fig. 2, and the edge a, as well as -the edges of the two ends, is beveled off to a sharp edge on the upper face at c, (the face next the handle,) as clearly seen in the draw ing. This bevel is very essential on account of the thickness required for proper strength in the blade, and it must be on the upper or working face to insure the proper working of the tool, which requires the bevel on that side to take hold of the weeds, &c. To the blade thus formed a goose-neck or other shank, b, is attached, either by brazing, by swaging out of the blade, or otherwise, as is found best in the manufacture.
