Application led'ulyis, 19M. Serial No. 849,779.
T0cz/,ZZ1li/mnirlrncrg/concern.'V Be it known that LWILLIAM B, TIMMoNs, a citizen of'lthe'United States-,residing at Trenton, in the county of' Grundy and State of Missouri, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Grocers Bins,` of which the following isfa specificatiomref# erence being hadto the accompanying draw.- ings.
This invention relates to an improved grocers bin for containing potatoes,` apples,
and like commodities, and has for itsg prie' mary object to produce-a device of this character which is strong and durable laits construction, highly serviceable and convenient in practical use and may be produced at;V
small manufacturing cost. 4 i Y VThe invention has for another and more specific objectto provide a bin of the above character including a base having a wide open' end and provided with means for di-. recting lthe contents ofthe bin toward the open end thereof and a hopper or container removably mounted upon` the rear end of said bin.
lVith the above andl other objects in view, the invention'consists inl novel features-.of construction, combination and arrangmentof parts as will be hereinafter referred. to and more particularly pointedn out in. the specification and. claims.
. For a full understanding of theinvention, reference'is toV be had to; the following description and accompanying drawing, in. which.-` Y
Figure 1` is a side elevation of a grocers bin constructed in accordance withthe preferred embodiment of my inventiongvFig.` 2
is a front elevationthereof; Fig. Sis a vertical section; andpFig. l isa sectiontaken.
on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
Referring in detail to the drawing, designates the opposite side walls of thehbase portion of my improved: bin. This base structure is preferably` bottoniless and is adapted to be arranged upon the floor or other suitable support whichwill constitute the bottom of the bin. These side walls are.
connected at one of their ends by an upstanding rear wall 7 and at their forward ends by a forwardly and upwardly inclined front wall 8. This latter wall is preferably spaced slightly from the forward edges of I the side walls 5. Metal angle bars indicated at 9 are securedto the forwardly projecting f ends of the side walls, the inwardly extend- Specicationof Letters'atent.'

ing-flanges-Qf'thereof acting to support and bracethe inclined front wall. The upper edgesof the side walls5 atV their forward ends are downwardly. inclined as shown at 10- and theupper edge of thefront wall 8 is disposed below the plane of the upper rear edges of the side walls 5 and the upper edgeof the rear wall 7.- n the rear end of this base portion of the bin, an obliquely inclined directing board 11 is arranged, said board being disposed at a reverse inclina tion to thefront wall 8 and adapted to direct the-contents of the bin into the forward end portion of the base from which they mayybe easily removed.
12 indicatesithe hopper or container which isfmountedupon the rear end of the base portion of the bin. This container is constructed ofthe solidside and rear walls 13 and let' respectively, and is provided with a front wall consisting of `a plurality of spaced verticalbars or slats 15. To the upper and lower ends of these. bars, as well asrthe rear andk sidewalls of the container, the cleats 16 are secured and at the corners ofthe container, the angular metal reinforcing straps 17 are securely bolted, the bolts indicated at 18 extending through the wallsof the container. The rear wall 14 of the hopper or container projects below the front and side walls thereof as shown at19. This downwardly projecting portion walls rest upon. the upper edgesof the base walls. Y
Upon the vertical `slats constituting the front wallof the container and immediately above the cleats 16 a suitable shelf 20 ishinged at one of its ends as shown at 21. The other end of this shelf is provided in its bottom. face with a, notch or recess 22 to receive the front end of a. supporting bar 23, which is hinged at its other end as at 24; upon the lower edge of the cleat 16. When the shelf 2O is disposed in its horizontal position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the inner endthereof is supported upon the upper edge of the cleat 16, while the outer end is supported by means of the bar 23.
Having above described the several structural features of my improved grocerys bin, its several advantages in practical use will of the bin by simply drawing or sliding the container forwardly upon the lrear upper edge portions of the side walls 5. The potatoes or other commodities contained inthe bin or hopper 12 are directed forwardly to the front open end of the receiving base by the inclined wall 11. The measure or other receptacle to receive the potatoes may be conveniently placed upon the shelf 20, while Ythe forwardly projecting wideopen end of Y the basepermits of easy access to the contents thereof. It will thus be seen that I have provided a very desirable bin construction, and one which is of great service and convenience in practical use. p
It may be ascertained when' the hopper or container 12 needs replenishing, as the contents thereof areV visible through the spaces between the front vertical slats or bars 15.
The container may, of course, be constructed in various sizes in accordance with the capacity desired, and owing to the sec` tional construction of the bin, the same may be compactly stored when not in use.
' It will further be appreciated that in view ofthe very simple construction of my invention, the same is very strong and durable and may beproduced at comparatively small manufacturing cost.
Thilo I have above described the pre? feried'forni, construction, and arrangement of the several elementsV employed, it will be understood that the device is, nevertheless, susceptible of considerable modification therein, and I therefore reserve the privilege of resorting to all such legitimate changes as may be fairly embodied within the spirit and scope of the `invention as claimed.
" lllhat isclaimed is: 1. A bin of the character described including a base structure having vertical side walls, a rear vertical wall, and a forwardly' and upwardly inclined front wall secured between 'said side walls, v'an obliquely` inclined wall'arranged between the rear ends of the sidewalls to direct theV contents of said base structure forwardly, and acon-V tainer removably mounted upon they rear" upper edges of the side wallsv and lhaving an extension formed upon one'of its walls depending below the lower edges ofthe `re-V maining walls of said container and restingV the base structure 1in oneV direction, and a supplementarysupportV fixed in *theV rear endofthe base structure to sustain a portion of the weight of said container.
3. A bin of the character described in-` cluding a base structure having vertical side walls, a rear vertical wall, and a forwardly and upwardly inclined front wall having its upper edge disposed below the upperedge of said rea-r vertical wall, 'an obliquely inclined directing wall secured between the side walls of said base'structur'e and engaged at its upper Vedge with said rear wall at a point below the upper edge of the latter, and a container removably mounted upon the upper edges of said side andrear walls of the base structure, the rear wall of said container having aV depending portion to extend downwardly upon the inner face of the rear wall of said base and rest upon the upper edge ofthe inclined'directingwall, the for-v ward end of the base structure being open at its top whereby said container inay be moved longitudinally upon the side walls Vof thev base in a forwarddirection and removed therefrom.
' In testimony whereof I hereuntoallix my;
signature in the presence of two witnesses.
