To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, HARRY B. HoToHKrss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Corning, in the county of Tehama and State of California, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bag-holders which support the bag in upright position while it is being filled.

The main purpose of my invention is to provide a holding device which will support the bag at the proper elevation andmaintain the mouth of the bag distended while it is being filled and also to provide a marginal guide or hopper for the material which is being emptied into the sack or bag.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate my invention, Figure l is a perspective view of .a bag-holder embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same; Fig. 4 is a sectional detail showing my adjustable support; and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the latter.

The main supporting frame of my bag holder comprises an inner bail or rectangular frame 2, and an outer bail hopper frame 3, which are concentric and are pivoted upon studs or pins 5, carried by the block 6, which constitutes the fourth side or closing member of the rectangular frame. The inner and outer bail members 2, 3, constitute the bag-clamping device and may be swung upwardly together or independently upon the pivot studs 5, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, and when in the lower horizontal or bag-holding position, rest upon the supporting studs 7 By pivoting the inner and outer bail members 2, 3 upon the same studs 5, so that they may be swung together into the vertical position, the device is very compact and occupies the minimum space in its inoperative or folded position. This arrangement also insures a uniform'space-between the inner and outer bail frames upon all three sides, thereby providing a uniform clamping pressure upon the edge of the bag which is held therebetween. -The bag holding frame is supported in a suitable manner upon a standard having a base 9 and upright or post 10.

The bail members may be swung upwardly into inoperative position over the top of the upright or post 10 and rest thereon, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2.

When a bag is to be filled, the inner bail member 2, is swung down to horizontal position, the outer bail or frame member being in raised. or vertical position. The mouth or open end of the bag is then passed upwardly through the bail 2, and the margin or edge of the bag is turned down over the bail, the back portion resting upon the top surface of the block frame member 6. The outer bail member is then swung down into horizontal position, thereby pressing the edge of the bag down against the outside of the inner bail and firmly holding it between the two bails. in the manner indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. I form the outer bail member 3, with a flaring upper portion so that it will constitute a hopper to receive the material and'guide it into the mouth of the bag. I also construct the block frame member 6, with an inclined upper face so that the margin of the bag resting thereon will slant inwardly toward the bag opening and cooperate with the frame 3 to form a complete hopper to direct the material into the bag.

When the'bag holder is to be used with bags of one length, the block member 6 may be bolted or otherwise secured directly to the upright support 10. In order. however, that the holder may be readily adjusted to different elevations, I have provided an adjustable support shown in Figs. 1- and 5, which comprise a metal band or hoop 12, having the sides extend obliquely so that the rear transverse member 12 is higher than the front member 12. The upper inner edge of the rear member and the lower inner edge of the front member are provided with inwardly projecting prongs or teeth 1% which normally engage the sides of the upright 10, the weight'of the holder and bag causing the prongs to grip more firmly.

When it is desired to change the position of the holder, the prongs are disengaged by lifting the block 6, and the holder may then be shifted to any position along the upright.

I have described in detail the particular constructions illustrated in the accompanying drawings for the purpose of disclosing an embodiment of my invention, but I am aware that various changes may be made therein within the scope of my claims without departing from the spirit of my'invention.

I claim 1. A bag holding device, comprising concentric bail members mounted upon pivots to swing into vertical or horizontal position and constituting bag-clamping members, and a frame member having a bag-supporting ledge extending between the ends of said bail members and carrying said pivots.

2. A bag holding device, comprising a supporting standard, a frame member secured thereto and provided with pivot studs upon opposite ends, inner and outer bail members concentrically mounted to swing upon said studs and constituting bag-clamping members, said concentric bail members bearing upon the top of the standard when swung upwardly into inoperative position, and stops secured to said frame member to support the bail members in horizontal posi tion.

3. A bag holding device, comprising a frame member with a downwardly and inwardly inclined upper surface and provided with pivot studs upon opposite ends, inner and outer bail members concentrically mounted to swing upon said studs, said outer bail having the upper portions of its Walls inclined downwardly and inwardly, said inclined surface and said inclined walls forming a hopper and serving to guide material inwardly into a bag held between said bails.

4. A bag holding device, comprising concentric bail members mounted upon pivots to swing into vertical or horizontal position and constituting bag-clamping members, a frame member having an inwardly and downwardly inclined bag-supporting ledge extending between the ends of said bail members and carrying said pivots, and a band or hoop secured to said frame members adapted to surround an upright or support and having means for engaging said upright.
