THE LOCK-'BITE ENVELOPE CORPORATI 0F NEW YORK.
oN, or NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION WRAPPER 0R BINDER.,
To all whom z5 may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trappers or Binders, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
This, invention relatesto improvements 1n wrappers or binders made of paper or similar flexible material, and adapted particularly for application to books, catalogues, etc. for the purpose of sending them by mail or ot-her purpose.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a sheet of flexible material with means for adapting the same to be wrapped about a book, catalogue, etc. so that the said sheet may be readily applied thereto.
Other objects of the invention are to pro-v vide a simple and eflicient wrapper or binder.
rfhese being among the objects of the present invention the same consists of certain features of novelty to be hereinafter described and then claimed with reference to the accompanying drawing illustrating a desirable embodiment of the invention and in which- Figure 1 is a plan of the preferred blank from which the wrapper or binder is made; Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the complete wrapper or binder appliedto a book; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line 3 3 Fig. 2.
A partial disclosure at least of the present invention is contained in my cov-pending application filed June 12, 1914, Serial No. 844,619.
The preferred blank for the improved wrapper or binder herein is shown in Fig. 1, and comprises a sheet of llexible material such as paper or the like having between its ends a body comprising substantially rectangular portions 10, 11, separated by a narrower portion 12, while a similar narrower portion 13 is located to one side of the larger portion 10. The larger portions 10, 11 are of substantially the same area and when the complete wrapper is applied to a book, for instance, they will lie against the opposite sides of said book, while the narrower portion 12 will lie opposite the back thereof, with the narrower portion 13 lying opposite the edges of the leaves of the book. the outer side of the portion 11 of said sheet there is located an oblong transverse portion 14, 15, of which the parts 14 and 15 areA ofhsubstantially the same area, and the part 15 is provided witha single pair of transverse slits 16 and 17which slits are substantially parallel with the continuous side. edges of the strip, whereby wing portions 18,19 are provided which extend transversely of the transverse portion 14, 15, or longitudinally of the sheet. rl`he opposite end 20 of the sheet, beyond transverse portion 13 is vadapted to be formed into a flap, which may be done by cuttingV off the corners thereof, or as indicated in the drawingv the corners 21 and 22 may be folded over along the lines 23, 23 so as, to. produce a tapering flap. The manner of forming a pocket to be engaged by said flap is clearly disclosed in my said applicawill be here given. To form the blank into a complete wrapper or binder the part 15 between the slits 18, 19 is pasted over against the part 14, but first within the edge fold thereby produced, a reinforcing tape or some similar flexible Vmaterial 30 is introduced in the fold, as
fully described in my said application. Next, the ends of the part 14 and the wing extensions 18, 19 are pasted against the adjacent surface of the body of the sheet of flexible material so that part 15 is turned underneath part 14. The paste should not of course extend to a point between the slits 16, 17. Inthis way a pocket will be formed located on one surface of said sheet, preferably having a reinforced edge.
In applying the wrapper or binder to a book, catalogue or the like, the intermediate narrow transverse portion 12 is secured to the back of said book such as 25 (see Figs. 2 and 3) as by paste applied at points 26, 27 indicated in Fig. 1. Of course some other suitable means for attaching the sheet to the back of the book may be substituted. Preferably, the narrow transverse portion 12 is defined by parallel lines 28, 29 which may be printed, scored or lindented upon the surface of said sheet opposite to that on which the pocket is located, whereby to guide one in properly securing the wrapper or binder in position. The location of the point of attachment at 12 will of course be determined the narrow l i by the proportions of the wrapper or binder. l
Having secured the wrapper or binder to the book, etc.,v the portions 10, l1 are caused to' engage over the opposite sides `of the book,
, while' the narrower portion l15 is brought around the free edges of the leaves, and the end with a transverse portion having a turned under part and secured at the ends to one face of said sheet, to provide a pocket, said turned-under part extending from the inner edge ofsaid transverse portion toward the adjacent end of the articleso as to pro- -vide an edge-fold located at that edge of said transverse'portion which is remote from said end of the article, and a flexible reinforce in the'edge fold between said transverse portion and turned under part, the
other'end of said sheet constituting a'flap to engage said pocket.'
2. A wrapper lor binder, comprisingv a flexible sheet having continuous substantially parallel edges, and provided at one `end with a transverse portion having a turned under part and secured at the ends to one'ace-'ofsaid sheet, to provide a pocket, saidends of said transverse portion having vwings vwhich extend transversely of said transverse portion and are secured along the side edges of said sheet, anda iexible rein- L" forcel in the edge fold between said transverse -lportion and turned under part, the
Copies of this patent maybe obtained for other end `of said sheet constituting a flap to engage said pocket.
3. A wrapper or binder, comprising a liexible sheet free from extensions at its side edges, so as to have continuous substantially parallel edges, and provided at one end with a transverse portion secured at the ends of one surface directly to one face of said sheet to provide a pocket, said surface being continuous with said face, the other end of said sheet constituting a flap to engage said pocket, said sheet being adapted to be laid out fiat, with said pocket disposed at one end thereof. v
4. A Wrapper or binder, comprising a flexible sheet free from extensions at its side edges, so as to have continuous substantially parallel edges, and provided at one end with a transverse portion secured at the ends to one face oi" said sheet to provide a pocket, said ends of said transverse portion having wings which extend transversely oi' said transverse portion and are secured along the side edges of said sheet, the outer edges of said wings constituting edges separate from those edge portions oi' said sheet to which said edges are secured, although continuations of said edges, and the other end of said sheet constituting a iiap to' engage said pocket.
