JOHN W. SMITH, OF THREE RIVERS, MICHIGAN.
VAGINAL POWDER-SPRAYER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application filed April 24,1913. Serial No. 763,469.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Three Rivers, in the county of St. Joseph, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vaginal Powder-Sprayers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in powder Sprayers, and particularly to those adapted for vaginal or uterine application.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a simple device of this character by means of which powdered medicaments may be quickly and easily in troduced into the vagina and uterus.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved sprayer, Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, Fig. 3 is an end view of the same, Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 44c of Fig. 2, Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional View taken on the line 55 of Fig. 1.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings 10 represents a receptacle in which is adapted to be placed the powdered medicament. One end of the receptacle is provided with a threaded mouth 11 to receive the threaded cap 12. The opposite end of the receptacle is provided with a thread ed nipple 13, to which may be attached the nozzle 14. Extending into the receptacle from the nipple is the outlet pipe 15, which is formed with the laterally arranged curved branches 16, open at their ends and through which the powdered medicament is adapted to pass to the nozzle. In one side of the receptacle is arranged a headed nipple 17, for attachment of a bulb 18, said bulb having an air inlet check valve 19 at its opposite end.
The operation of the device may be briefly described as follows: The receptacle is filled with the proper powdered medicament and the cap screwed tightly thereon. The nozzle 14-. is inserted into the vagina or the mouth of the uterus, and the bulb pressed. The air entering the receptacle will agitate the powder and as the only outlet for the air is through the pipe 15, the air will pass through the nozzle into the vagina or uterus, carrying the powder with it, so that the medicament is applied directly to the affected part in an effective manner.
As a general rule medicaments are injected into the vagina and uterus in liquid form, which is found to be unsatisfactory in that only a small quantity remains with the affected parts, the remainder escaping. Now, by means of the present device, the medicament can be applied to the aiiected parts without loss, as the medicament in dry form will cling to the moist walls of the vagina and uterus, and mixing with the secretions of said Walls, produce the greatest amount of benefit.
What is claimed is:
A device for applying powdered medicaments comprising a powder containing receptacle, a threaded nipple on one end of the receptacle for attachment of a vaginal or other nozzle, a cap on the opposite end of the receptacle, a bulb attached to one side of the receptacle for blowing air into the receptacle, an outlet pipe within the receptacle and connected to the threaded nipple, said pipe having lateral curved branches, whereby pressure on the bulb will agitate the powder and force same through the nozzle into the vaginal or uterine channels.
In testimony whereof, I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN W. SMITH.
