DEVICE FOR APPLYING HAIR- TONICS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
. Patented J an. 9, 1912.
Application filed June 13, 1911. Serial No. 632,905.
"To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, INA O. HALL, a citi- 'zen of the United States, residing at Calplication of the preparation directly to the roots of the hair and which will be so constructed as to positively prevent the unnecessary loss of the liquid preparation during the application of the same to the scalp.
Another object 'of the invention is to provide a novel form of valve member which will operate to prevent the discharge of the liquid preparation when the device is not in use and to inclose the valve in an elastic reservoir bulb, the same being adapted to be actuated manually so as to more the valve to an open position to permit the discharge of the liquid preparation when tln device is in use.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side view of the device. Fig. 2 is a section therethrough.
The device comprises a substantially comb-like member 1 which is provided with an elongated head 2 which is hollow and from which extends a longitudinal series of hollow teeth 3 from which the liquid prep aration vmay find its escape onto the scalp when the device is in use. The head 2 and the teeth 3 may be constructed as an integral part and made of rubber, celluloid or any other :ater'ial which may be found most suitable for the purpose intended. The head 2 is provided with an integral nipple 4 having a threaded passage 5 therein, the
flared passage 6 and the relatively short passage 7 the latter being arranged in direct communication with the head 2.
The liquid reservoir comprises an elastic bulb 8, preferably rubber. The bulb is provided at one end with an extension 9 which 18 embraced bf. an exterio-rly threaded sleeve 10 which is removably fitted in the passage 5 of the nipple 4.. The extension 9 has formed thereon a substantially conical portion 11 which fitsirictionally against the walls of the passage 6 soas to effectively seal the joint at this point and prevent leakage when the device is not in use. The extension 9 has formed therein a feed passage 12, one end of which is arranged in open communication with the passage 7 in the head 2. The opposite end of the passage 6 has its walls flared to form a valve seat 13 against which the valve 14 is normally seated so as to close communication between the reservoir and the head 2. This valve is carried by the stem 15' which extends into the bulb in axial .alinem'ent with the feed passage 12 therein. It is my desire to provide means, whereby when the bulb is compressed for the purpose of discharging the liquid into the head 2 the valve let Wlll be raised from its seat, and in view thereof, the bulb is provided interiorly with a memher which includes integral portions 16 which are flared in opposite directions, be-.
ing arranged in intersecting planes and connected with the outer end of the valve stem 15 immediately at their point of connection with each other. hen pressure is exerted on the opposite side of the bulb-the portion 16 will be forced to the ,dotted line positions shown inFig. 2 of the drawing so as to move the valve 14 to a full open position. The bulb is provided at one end with a filling opening 17 which is closed by a suitable cap 18 which may be conveniently removed from the bulb when it is desired to fill the latter with th liquid scalp preparation.
In operation of the device the bulb is grasped in the hand and the device is moved through the hair so that the teeth 3 are brought into eflective contact with the scalp. At the will of the operator the bulb may be compressed so as to permit of the desired discharge of the scalp preparation as will be understood.
