APPLICATOB Filed Feb. 18, 1944 2 Sheets-Sheet l Inventor 7r/z e f/ajaszad wwdza and E A. HABOSTAD Aug. 7, 1945.
APPLICATQR Filed Feb. 18, 1944 2 SheetSSheet 2 Inventor on the line 3-4 of Figure l Patented Aug. 7, 1945 NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE am a? I 1 522 996 pp 31. 13Z -l3) r I v 1' Claim. My'invention relates to improvements in applicators for use on hair tonic bottles to apply tonic therefrom to th hair and scalp.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a simply constructed, inexpensive device which may be easily and quickly attached to hair tonicbottles having threaded necks. andv which is operative to distribute said tonics, particularly heavy oil tonics, over the scalp and around the roots of the hair without necessitating rubbing with the fingers, and which obviates getting oil on the hands, waste of oil, and saves time and labor in applying hair tonics and the like.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will the drawings accompanying and formingpart of the specification.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my improved applicator in its preferred embodiment,
Figure 2 is aview in side elevation,
Figure 3 is a view in horizontal section taken and drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4 is a detail view in vertical section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale, and
Figure 5 is a view partly in elevation and partly in section of an adapter forming part of my invention. J
Referring to the drawings by numerals, according to my invention, in the preferred embodiment thereof, a comb-like "member is provided comprising a flat, elongated body I provided'at its bottom with a coplanar-row of teeth 2, and acentral neck at its'top terminating in an in-- ternally threaded collar 4 for screwing'onto the ilarly to the outlet ends l3. The outlet ends l3,
I! are offset inwardly from the terminals, or tips, of theteeth 2 tov prevent the same from becoming clogged by dirt, dandruii, et cetera, ac-
.cumulated on the scalp. The terminals, or tips,
' of a nipple portion internally grooved,'as at v I of the teeth 2 are arranged in an are generally conforming to the shape of the average head.
A threaded needle valve member it extends into the neck 3 and theinner end of the duct 9 on one side of the neck for closing said duct.
0n the other side of said neck 3, of the applicator, is a valved air inlet pump comprising a tubular, air inlet nozzle l'l fitted into and secured in the neck 3 toextend radially therefrom with the inner end thereof opening into the duct 9 and internally beveled to provide avalve seat l8. A'resilient bulb I! of rubber or the like is attached to the outer end of said nozzle H by means II, the interilt with a pair of external flanges 22 the nozzle II with a flaring valve member 23' on exteriPallythreaded neck I of a hair'tonic bot- 1 3. A relatively smaller diameter 'duct ll extends from the inner end of the 'duct l hithebody I obliquely of the duct 3 toward one end of-the body l. Asecond ductJl, similar to duct it, extends from an intermediate, point in the duct ll obliquely'toward the. opposite end of the The outer ends offthe ducts ll, H
through theoutermost, or end, teeth 2 of the rd! and which are provided with tapered restricted the inner end thereof for engagement with the valve seat It, and is provided with an operating button 24 on its outer end within the bulb IS.
'A coil spring 25 circumposed on the valve stem 23" between the button 24 and the outer end of the stem l1 urges said stem outwardly of the nozzle H and normally engages the valve member 23' with the seat l3. An air inlet aperture 1' 24 is provided in the bulb is in the axis of the button 24 and stem 23.
Adapters, such as shown at 21 in Figure 5, may be provided for screwing into the collar 4 and onto bottle necks of larger sizes than the internal size of the collar 4.
The described applicator may be constructed, with the exception of, the needle valve member II and the air pump, of plastic or any other light, strong, inexpensive material.
- Referring now to the use and operation of my invention, withthe applicator attached, as described, and the needle valve member it opened,
. as occasion-may'require, the bottle 6 is held with V engages the button 24 and presses the same suiilciently to unseat the valve member 23' and open the air nomle II to the duct l0 Air inthe bulb freely out of the teeth 2 byway of the ducts l2, ll. With the bottle 6 and body I held substantially upright, the tips 1 of the teeth 2 are rubbed over the scalp, the bulb I! being released and again compressed, in the manner described, to admit more air as may be necessary to attain the desired flow of the contents of the bottle out of said teeth 2. By adjusting the needle valve member IS, the discharge from the ducts I2, I 4, or in other words, the teeth 2, may also be varied according to the type of hair tonic 'being used, that is, heavy or light oil.
The button 24 is spaced from the outer end of the nozzle ll, normally, so that it engages said end of the nozzle when the valve member 23' has opened sufficiently, and thereby prevents further opening movement of said member.
The foregoing wi1l, it is'believed, sufilce to impart a clear understanding of my invention without further explanation Maniiestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modiflcation without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope o the appended claim.
What I claim'is:
An applicator for attachment to a bottle having a threaded neck comprising an elongated body adapted to extend crosswise of the mouth of the bottle, an internally threaded attaching neck extending centrally from one side of the :body for turning onto the neck of the bottle, and provided with an axial bore extending into said body, a row of teeth extending from the other side of said body, ducts extending into said teeth and in communication with the first-mentioned duct, the ducts in the teeth opening onto the sides of the teeth adjacent the tips thereof, and manipulative means to introduce air underpressure into the duct first mentioned including a valved compressibutton within the bulb operative by compression ARNE HABQSTAD.
