Description
June 18, 1935. W.-Y. OHARA 2,005,385
OUTBOARD MOTOR WASHER Filed Sept. 19, 1953 W. Y. O Hara A Home y Invenior- Patented June I 18, 1935 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OUTBOARD MOTOR WASHER William Y. OHara, Waipahu, Territory of Hawaii Application September 19, 1933, Serial No. 690,168 1 Claim. (L 285161) This invention relates to a device especially adapted for use in cleaning or flushing outboard motors.
Briefly the invention consists in the provision of a device of the character above mentioned which is in the form of a nozzle and can be readily applied to one end of a garden hose, the nozzle forming the present invention having its free end formed with a spout adapted to fit snugly in the outlet of an outboard motor so that the water will be directed into and through the motor.
The invention together with its objects and advantages will be best understood from a study of the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein:
Figure l is a perspective view illustrating the application of the invention to one end of a garden hose.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals it will be seen that the washer indicated generally by the reference numeral 5 is in the nature of a nozzle and comprises a body formed of metal or other suitable material having a relatively large end 6, and a relatively smaller end I, the ends 6 and 1 tapering inwardly to a reduced portion 8 so that the shape of the body will be such as to permit the same to be easily and conveniently held in the hand of the operator.
At the end 1 thereof the bore of the body 5 is internally threaded for screw threaded engagement with the nipple 9 usually provided on one end of a garden hose a portion of which is shown in the drawing and indicated by the reference numeral l0. At said end the body 5 is provided externally with an integral knurled collar ll so as to facilitate the screwing of the device on to the hose "I.
At the end 6 the body 5 is substantially noncircular in cross section and integral with the body at the end 8 is a reduced spout forming portion I2 that is also non-circular in cross section and is of a size to fit conveniently within the outlet of an outboard motor.
The bore l3 of the body 5 is cylindrical from the end 'I to the point where it merges with the 5 bore of the spout 12. The bore of the spout is clearly shown in the drawing being non-circular or substantially rectangular in cross section.
The body 5 at the junction thereof with the spout l2 forms an enlarged shoulder against 10 which is fitted a washer ll of rubber or other suitable material and as will be noted the washer I4 is substantially concavo-convex, while the body at the end 6 is convex to engage the concave face of the washer ll. The washer i4 is secured 15 or anchored in position through the medium of an integral rib l5 formed on the spout l2 and embedded in the washer It as shown.
Provided in the bore I! of the nozzle 5 adjacent the reduced intermediate portion 8 of the 20 body is a transverse member l6 which serves to divide the flow of water through the bore l3 and assists in separating foreign matter from the water.
In actual practice the end 8 of the device is I screw threaded on the end of the hose III while the spout I2 is inserted in the outlet port of the engine. The water is turned on and flows through the hose l0 and the-nozzle 5 into the casing of the outboard motor for flushing and cleaning the latter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
In a device of the character described, a body having a bore extending therethrough, said body having an enlarged end, and a relatively small end, said body tapering from its ends to an intermediate portion, said body at its smallest end being threaded for screw threaded engagement with the nipple of a hose, and at its largest end being provided with a spout adapted to be inserted in the outlet port of an engine or the like, for flushing the latter.
WILLIAM Y. OHARA.
