J. W. HAUGHAWOUT. DEPURATOR.
No. 452,131. Patented May 12,1891.
M WJM W m 61 Ho: v1 24 UNITED STATES 'ATENT OFFICE.
JOHN W. HAUGHAIVOUT, OF OMAHA, NEBRASKA.
DEPURATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 452,131, dated May 12, 1891.
Application filed January 5, 1891. Serial No. 376,795. (No model.) 7
vention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention has relation to a new and useful improvement in depurators.
My improvement consists in constructing a depurator of any suitable conformation, comprising a cup and superchamber, as will be described more fully hereinafter, and finally pointed out in the claims.
In the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 shows my depurator as constructed when adapted to be used upon the forehead, abdomen, or the fleshy parts of the body. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 shows a view, partly in section, of my depurator as constructed and adapted to be used as a dental operative; and Fig. 4 shows my device as arranged in the form of a circular cup.
Similar letters of reference refer to corresponding parts throughout the drawings.
A represents a cup, of any suitable depth and conformation and of metal or any other material, which is provided axially at a convenient point with the perforated metallic partition B, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. This partition B is preferably fixed so that it divides the depurator into two compartments, the lower or flooding chamber 0 and the super or supply chamber D, the capacity of the flooding-chamber being slightly in excess of the supply-chamber, as illustrated throughout the drawings.
Leading into each chamber is a stem or duct, the one marked E leading into the supply-chamber and the one marked F leading from the flooding-chamber, as shown. These stems are adapted to receive the supply and waste tubes employed in the use of the device, and may be located at any convenient point. In practice I prefer giving greater capacity to the exit tubes and stem, so that there may be no back-pressure within either chamber.
All the parts are preferably of sheet metal and made non-corrosive by means of plating.
The use of my device is as follows: When the affected part is to be treated I provide each of the stems with suitable tubing, which may be of rubber or any other material, the one connected to the supply-stem being in siphon connection with the medical reservoir, while the escape-tube is led into a suitable receptacle. lVhen the siphon action takes place, the medical agent will be forced from the superchamber D upon the affected parts in a series of small streams. The 10- tion will flood the chamber C until it finds its outlet-tube. As soon as this outlet or escape tube becomes filled the fluid within acts as an exhaust pump in completely withdrawing the atmosphere withinthe cup. This is of course what is desired, as by this means the natural pressure of the air is withheld from the alfected parts, while the elastic force of the air within the human body assists in throwing out the offensive matter, which is carried off.
The device can be made of any size or configuration, so as to accommodate the whole or any particular part of the human body.
If desired, the superchamber D may be eliminated, as is shown in Fig. 3, where I simply lead the supply-tube E, which is perforated, into the flooding-chamber in the manner illustrated.
"Having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent, is
1. A depurator comprising a suitable cup, a perforated flooding-chamber within said cup, and supply and exit ways, all arranged substantially as described 2. As a new article of manufacture, a depurator comprising a suitable cup, a perforated partition disposed within said cup and dividing said eup into a supply and flooding chamber, and inlet supply and exhaust tubes leading, respectively, into and from said sup- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN \V. IIAUGHAWOU".
5 ply and flooding; chamber, all arranged to 0pfitnesses:
ei'ate substantially as and for the purpose set N. P. FEIL, forth. G. N. SNES.
