HEATING STOVE AND FURNACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 22, 1915.
Application filed rebruar 25, 1915. Serial No. 10,440.
T all whom it may concern v Be-it known that I, HERMAN FREDERICK- SON, a citizen of the United States, and re-' the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to stores and furnaces of the class used for heating rooms or compartments in a building, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which may be used for heating a room or compartment in which it is placed and also other rooms or compartments in the same building, and whichis simple in construction, efhcient in operation and may be easily cleaned oryrepaired whenever necessary, and withthis and other objects in view the invention consists in a device of the class specified, constructed as hereinafter described-and claimed.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of theviews, and in which':
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of a heating apparatus or device of the class specified, constructed according to my invention, and, Fig. 2 a front view thereof and showing a modification.
In the practice of my invention, as Shawn in the drawing, I provide a main outer asing a in which is placed a stove or furnace body I) composed, in the construction shown, of top and bottom membersb and b and beneath the stove or furnace body I) is the usual ash-pit 1) between which and the body I) is a grate c of any preferred construction, and the ash-pit b is provided with a door cl made, as shown, in the form of an air mg ister device cl through which air maybe admitted into the ash-pit from Which it will pass up through the grate 0 into the body I).
The top part b of the body b is provided at one side thereof with /a tubular inlet or neck I) through which, coal or other fuel may be passed into the body I), and this inlet connects with the casing a and is provided with a door e which is also preferably provided with an air register device a.
At the bottom of the casing aand on the opposite sides thereof are'inlet air registers f of any suitable construction and-bymea'ns of which air in any desired quantity may be admitted into the bottom of said casing-,and at the bottom of said casing and preferably at the back thereof, I place awater tank 9 which may be detachably, or otherwise, se-
cured in said casing, and which extends in wardly through said casingx-and the top portionof which is provided with ports'or passages 9 through which vapor may escape and mingle with the air passing upwardly through said casing, and that part of the water tank 1 outside of the casing a is pro-. vided with a door g through which said tank may be filled, or partially filled with water.
In the top part of the casing a and/over the body b is placed a. box member h which rests on the top part b of the bodyb, and is secured thereto at Iii-in anydesiredmanner, and the bottom. of whichjis provided with a large aperture h rough which the hot gases or productsio- --'-'c o'rnbus'tionipass from the body (2 into, the ex member lb, and at thefront of .thestove or furnacethe box member h is provided with a tubul ar neck 71, which connects with the front of the casing-a and is provided with a closure cap k which may be detached whennecessary, and this forms an aperture through which the interior; of the box member k may be cleaned whenever desired of any deposits which may collect therein.
The casing a is provided with a cap or cover a provided centrally with an air flue i through which hot air is, or may be conveyed, upwardly from the stove or furnace into compartments arranged over that in which the stove or furnace is located, and the box member 7a. is provided with an elbow pipe or flue j which connects with the central top portion of said box member and passes out through one side of the air fine 2', and through which the smoke and other hot gases of combustion pass, but my invention is not'limited to the shape of the flue j, and said flue may be extended vertically through the air flue i, if desired, and as indicated in dotted lines at 7' The box member h is also provided at the back of the stove with a neck-shaped flue exte sion 7a which connects with the casing a Ed is provided with a detachable cap k d the escape'fiue 1', or an escape flue of any form and construction may be connected with the flue extension is instead of with the top of the box member 72. as shown. \Vith this construction the air enters the casing a at the bottom thereof and passes up around the stove body I; and around the box member ii and out through the air flue i, as indicated by the arrows m, and the products of combustion pass from the body 1) through the box member hand through the flue j, as indicated by the arrows and the air is highly heated and may be used for heating rooms or compartments other than that in which the stove or furnace is placed and any part of a building, and the casing a radiates ample heat for heating the room or compartment in which the said stove or furnace is placed.
The box member 11. is preferably provided with a horizontal partition plate m which extends from one end thereof longitudinally thereof, to within a predetermined distance from the other endand which is provided with an upwardly directed extension m and the hot products of combustion in their passage through said box member pass around the plate m, and the part m thereof, as indicated, and this forms a tortuous passage for said products of combustion, whereby the greatest amount of heat units are utilized, but my invention is not limited to any particular construction, or] means for forming a tortuous passage through the box member it.
When it is desired to use the stove or furnace for the purpose of heating only the compartment or room in which said stove or furnace is placed the air flue 'i and smoke flue 7' may be detached, and a cap 91. may be substituted for the air flue i, as shown in Fig. 2, and the smoke flue may be connected with the back of the stove at k, as hereinbefore described, and while I have shown and described the construction which I prefer in carrying my invention'into effect, my invention is not limited to the details of construction herein shown and described, and changes therein and modifications thereof, may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to 'secure by Letters Patent, is
A heating apparatus of the class described, comprising a stove or furnace body, a casing inclosing said body and provided at the bottom thereof with air inlets, and a box member placed on the top of the stove or furnace body and inclosed by said casing and around which air admitted at the bottom of said casing passes, said box member being in communication with the stove or furnace body and being provided with a tortuous passage for the products of combustion, and centrally of the top thereof with an attachment for a smoke flue, the top of the casing being also provided with an attachment for an air flue, and said box member being provided at one side with a doorway which opens through the corresponding side of the casing and at the opposite side with a smoke flue attachment which opens through said side of the casing.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this Q3r d day of February 1915.
HERMAN FREDERICKSON.
